PR trip: down to the details
I have put together the basics for our upcoming trip based on some suggestions from the fine folks here. Now it is time to get down to some details.
Background: family of 4 (kids 10 & 7) traveling to PR from 3/31 to 4/10. Flights, accommodations, and rental cars are set. Itinerary as follows:
3/31 -- Fly to SJU. Holiday Inn Express in Condado (3 nights)
4/1 -- Old San Juan
4/2 -- more OSJ or day trip to Arecibo / Camuy Caves
4/3 -- Luquillo or El Yunque, moving to Sue's Place near Rain Forest (3 nights)
4/4 -- Luquillo or El Yunque (Easter)
4/5 -- snorkel trip w/ Erin Go Braugh (confirmed)
4/6 -- travel to Vieques (ferry), check in to Esperanza Inn (3 nights)
4/7 -- Vieques
4/8 -- Vieques, Bio Bay tour at night
4/9 -- travel back to San Juan (back at HI Express for 1 night), whatever day
4/10 -- fly home
We will have a main island car for the duration if necessary. Not planning on using it for OSJ. Will also have a jeep on Vieques.
Some questions:
1) The Camuy Caves trip sounds interesting. Worthwhile? Relatively easy to find / get to?
2) Planning on leaving the car at Fajardo while in Vieques. Any issues?
3) How far in advance is it necessary to book the Biobay tour? Are there multiple outfits that do the non-kayak option?
4) Favorite (family) hikes in El Yunque?
5) General food recommendations? Looking for good local, but not necessarily expensive food. May get tired of the fried meat pockets after 10 days. Other suggestions? Any particular options near Luquillo?
6) How will Easter impact El Yunque or Luquillo?
7) Any logistical issues with the ferry and getting to the rental car place in Vieques (with a family of 4 mind you)?
Anything else I should be on top of? Thanks!

I'll answer what I can...
1) not been
2) not done this but I hear it's possible. We've returned car before taking ferry to Vieques and then either got a taxi back to San Juan on return OR hired another car and get picked up at ferry by car hire company (used L&M car rental).
3) book in advance now ... check the moon calendar for best night. we couldn't get the time slot we wanted last time and had to go late so they do book up.
I only know of Island Adventures; they're great!
4) la mina falls hike
5) kiosks at Luquillo are good. I think kiosk #2 gets recommended the most and we ate there once. with kids I recommend the Banana cafe on Vieques; good food great views.. I liked the cocktails next door though!
6) don't know
7)be early for ferry. it can be a scramble to get on at peak times residents get priority. Ask rental place if they'll pick you up at ferry or drop car at lodgings (both methods have worked for us) or just take taxi from ferry to car place (taxi/buses meet the ferry on Vieques and are cheap)
take your own snorkel gear to Vieques!

Thanks, sassy_cat. Sounds like I should give Island Adventures a ring.
So are their no snorkel rental places in Vieques or are they too cost prohibitive? Better in Fajardo? (we don't have our own equipment . . . yet).
Anyone else or did I try to cover too many things in one post?

Hi indy_dad, we took our own equipment but don't remember seeing any rental places in Vieques.
I'd recommend buying before you go so the kids can try out the equipment in a pool or even the bath. Borrow a set to start if possible.
Maybe top the post later and you might get more responses. Have you used the search box above to find more info on Vieques? I read a report recently about the caves.. they weren't open a couple of times so you might want to check that before making a day trip.
