day trip to vieques
will be staying in ocean park, san juan. according to my calculations, we would have to catch the 9:30 AM & 3PM ferry from and to Fajardo.
what do you think?? to little time??
will be there beginning of march. looks like not a good time for bio-bay but i did want to check out the island.

Too short! the ferry takes over an hour.
Really you just have time to take a taxi and have lunch in Esperanza or skipping lunch you might have time to hire a taxi to and from one of the beaches for a couple of hours of beach time.
I think you'd have to pay for the taxi to wait for you or be confident they would return as there's no regular public transport between the beaches and the ferry terminal.

Vieques is really an overnight. There are too many variables and you need to plan on the unexpected. You are in Puerto Rico! Having an overnight planned will give you better time for a quick visit. Otherwise, it's just too pushed.
You are on vacation!!

thanks for the feedback. would the same hold true if we took the 6pm ferry back. i only mentioned the 3pm ferry because i was concerned about driving back in the dark.
if we do decide to stay overnite and since we would be driving our rental car to fajardo, can we take it on the ferry to the island?

It's really difficult to do a day trip to Vieques. The ferry system is very unreliable. We just returned from a week vacation there, and each time the ferry was delayed by at least 1 hour, in one case by 3 hours. In addition you really need a car to see the island as the beaches and food are not near each other. I would reccomend an overnight, stay in Esperanza, rent a car and travel to the beaches.

You should plan on leaving your car in Fajardo. The ferry only accepts so many cars and it's likely that the locals will get to take their cars before travelers.
It's easiest to just leave your car at Fajardo and hop the ferry. Then, either hire a taxi for the day or rent a jeep from one of the local rental places:
Acevedo's Car Rentals (787) 741-4380
- Chepito's Car Rentals (787) 741-8691
- Marcos Car Rentals (787) 741-1388
- Maritza Car Rentals (787) 741-0078
- Martineau Car Rental (787) 741-0087, (787) 741-3948
- Vieques Car Rental (787) 741-1037

Plan for an overnight and realize that the ferries do not run on time. For that limited time I would stay in Esperanza and that would let you walk to the restaurants and you could drive to the closest beach, Sun Beach, for the short morning you will have.
Further down the road is Blue Beach and Red Beach. Both gorgeous but you'll need more time unless you are going for a scouting trip only. And, the beaches do not have any chairs or umbrellas so you will need to provide your own.
Hope you get to go but leave lots of room on time for mishaps in schedules.
*car rentals - we used Martineau's and had a good experience and got a jeep in very good condition.

We flew over on Vieques Airlink and it was a great flight and very easy and quick. We still stayed overnight, though and glad we did. Vieques was great. When on vacation, when you want to relax and/ or enjoy yourself, I like to avoid potentials hassles like a delayed ferry and having to get there extra early to wait in line. The price of the plane ticket was worth it and views were beautiful.
