Eleuthera Rental: Pebbles at On the Rocks
We love Eleuthera. It is a wonderful island and we have stayed at a number of places on the island. We decided to rent Pebbles after finding it listed online. The pictures on the listing looked great, so we booked our stay in April 2010 from Patricia Leigh-Wood. We rented the unit for approximated $200 a night. What a mistake. After we arrived we quickly found what was not clear from the pictures. Pebbles is dirty. Pebbles is not well maintained.
There were a number of things that made the unit uninhabitable. The rugs on the floor had mites/bugs in them that kept biting us all night. There were electrical problems.
When we got in bed, the sheets had bugs in them that were crawling all over us. Usually, landlords ensure their rental unit has either functioning screens or proper doors that prevent bugs from entering. The screens and doors were all in terrible shape and would not keep anything out. After barely sleeping and realizing that nothing would be done, we left. We scrambled to find another place to stay last minute to try and salvage our vacation. This meant paying twice for the week. The owners refused to provide any compensation and told us they see nothing wrong with the unit.
Stay away from Pebbles or On the Rocks in Eleuthera.

hi welcome to fodors.
i'm confused. was pebbles the bad house or was it on the rocks.? is ms. leitgh-wood the owner or a rental agent somewhere?
did you take photos to substantiate your problems?
what villa did you move to and was it better?
i've not been on eleuthera yet - where have you stayed on past visits that were good properties? we love villa vacations.
sorry you had a bad experience.

We stayed at Pebbles which is the guest house for On the Rocks. They are both in pretty bad shape. There are better places on the island to stay. Here is a website with more information and photos on the properties: http://www.pebbles-eleuthera.com/

2 Sister: the bedrooms are on the lower level and the living space (kitchen, living room etc.) are on the 2nd floor. Yes you did have to climb down a ladder to get to the bedrooms, but I found that to be fun. You could also access the bedrooms from the back patio sliding doors. There was a great deck in the back which led to the diving board/water. We still miss that diving board. Snorkeling around the house was pretty good, but you can also go to Double Bay and Ten Bay, which are 10 minutes or so drive and Double Bay has great snorkeling. Ten Bay is a great place to take the kids.
