Do we need a rental car in St John for the week.
My husband and I will be heading to St John next weekend, do we need to rent a car in St Thomas and keep it for the week or just rent for 3 or 4 days once we get to St John? We are staying in Cruz Bay and want to check out all the beaches. Thanks for any help!

There is no need to rent on St Thomas. Reserve a rental on St John. Rental companies will meet you at the ferry dock and return you to their office to do the paperwork. Search Fodors, the subject of recommended rental companies has come up before.
Not sure about 3-4 days vs a week.
I've recommended Courtesy and C&C in the past.

We rent our cars on St. Thomas and take the car ferry to St. John. We used to always rent on St. John but recently changed out habit. It you haven't been to St. John before then I would take a cab to Red Hook, the ferry to Cruz Bay and get your rental car on St. John. We've used Courtesy several times and highly recommend them.

You absolutely MUST rent a jeep if you plan on exploring all the different beaches. I honestly can't even imagine staying on St John and not being able to get around on your own. Just so many incredible lookouts & beaches.
I would call around and compare prices. St John Car Rental is a popular rental place right in Cruz Bay, and they have a lot that you can use at night if you need to park in town for dinner. They had the best rate when we used them, and they were great to deal with. Parking sucks in Cruz Bay, so I wouldn't rent from anywhere that doesn't let you use their lot.

You will definitely need a car to explore the island. If you are right in town you could get away with not having one for a few days. But, you must rent it NOW!!!!!!! If you wait until you get there, one might not be available and as it is you are really pushing it! Your choices are going to probably be very limited. We always rent well in advance of our trip. Where are you staying in Cruz Bay? Not many places are truly walking distance to town.

I would rent a jeep for your entire stay on STJ, even if you're staying in Cruz Bay. There is so much to see and explore, driving there is fun in itself! You can check out a video in my blog of my hubby and I driving North Shore Road, home of some of STJ's beautiful beaches. We used L&L Jeep Rental.
