Do I need reservations for auto ferry to St. John?

I will be taking a jeep from St. Thomas to St. John. My plane is due to land at 4:10 pm on Friday the 22nd. I plan on buying a few provisions on St. Thomas before catching a car ferry to St. John.

It seems I have a couple of options with two different companies one has a scheduled trip at 6:30 the other 7:30. Do I need reservations? As of now I don't have one, as I'm not sure of my arrival time in Red Hook.

Can I expect that there will always be space available to get over to St. John on a Friday evening? Or should I be making a reservation with one of the carriers?

Thanks for your help.

The answers to your questions are NO and NO.

No, you don't need reservations - they don't even take them.

No, you can't always expect there will be space available. Whether there's room for you depends how many cars are queued up in line ahead of you. Sometimes theres's only a few people other times there are more. there are never any guarantees so your guess is as good as anyone's but most times you should be OK.

When we were there a couple of weeks ago, people were talking about not being able to take rental cars from one island to another. Does anyone know more about that?

We rented on St John so it wasn't an issue for us. I assume you've cleared it with your rental agency?

Some car rental companies based on St. Thomas DO NOT allow you to take cars on the ferry to St. John, others do. The only way to know for certain who does or who doesn't is to check with the rental company are using.
