Christmas in Jamaica

Hi

We are staying at the Jamaica grande christmas through new years and was wondering if any one else had spent christmas there. What is it like?

Any recommendations on anything special we could do or see in Ocho Rios during those days(25-26)?

Be aware that Dec 26 is Boxing Day in Jamaica (as it is in the UK) so most attractions and shops will be closed.....

Christmas in Jamaica centers on church services & community parties, family and friends, special feasts with foods like sorrel punch and black cake -- not gift giving. If you can connect with a local, get yourself invited to any of the above outside the resort and see the real Jamaica. If you can't, the days before Christmas will be hurry=hurry, but the 25th/26th quiet. If you've not done Dunn's River Falls, it'll be less crowded time to visit.
Harmony Hall, a wonderful gallery just outside Ochi, will also stage a new show with a 'Meet the Artists' opening night (info online).

P.S. Bring 'braata'/a little something extra for Christmas for staffers at JG who treat you well. A crisp US$20 in a holiday card will often work wonders...

tivertonhouse, thanks for the suggestions. This may be a goofy question - I have never been to an AI before - and I was planning to get a little something for the staff who look after us - how many people should I plan for?

Optical--I avoid AIs like the plague but your room maid, a favorite waitperson and/or bartender ,the concierge if he/she sets up special things for you should probably be on your list...

...but if you choose a Superclubs or Sandals resort, tip very carefully as the staff at those can be fired for accepting tips.

(I don't stay AI either but I'd tip there if I did....average wage for maid/gardener sort of hotel staff is $30 US a week...even a modest tip of $10 each makes a big difference).
