Calling home from the Caribbean
Hi all.
I have a question about calling the US from the islands. I am going on a cruise to the Southern Caribbean and really want to call home once a day (to check up on child etc.)
I know I can call from the boat but that can be expensive. My question is...are there places in port (like tobacco shops or something) where I can purchase phone cards to call the US. I guess these cards would work from any payphone. This is how I would call home from Europe but not sure if it is the same from the Car.
Please advise.
Thanks
K

When you dock in St. Thomas, you will find yourself in a shopping area. If you cross the road, you will see a couple of phone/internet places where you can use their phone to call home. I went to place called Soapy's, it was on the second floor above some shops. Also, keep in mind that the "crew" will be calling home and using the internet to contact their families, so you can ask them where is the best place on each Island.

I take a rechargeable AT&T card that I bought 2 years ago at Sams Club. I look up the AT&T access numbers for the islands I will be visiting before I leave and carry that info with me.
In many of the ports you mentions, there are banks of pay phones near the pier. Sometimes the waits are long, due to the crew members calling home. Hotels are another good spot to make calls from.
Calls from the ship can run $7 per minute.
We leave on Saturday for a SCarib cruise and cannot wait! It is a wonderful itinerary.
