Can I use my cell phone in St. Maarten?
Does anyone know what the US/Siint Maarten telephone service is like these days? Can I use my own, or get an inexpensive cell phone when I'm down there Mar 17 to 24?We haven't been there in 5 years, though over the years we've been there many times. Phone service back to US was always expensive and spotty. In fact phones between the French and the Dutch side were spotty & expensive. Just wondering if it is now possible to use a regular (Verizon) non-worldwide cell phone? I could borrow my son's English cell phone, and put a new Simcard in it if that would work. Any help would be gratefully received.

Well, I've been surfing around the web and found some St. Martin sites which have lots of info on cell phones, so I guess I'm Ok - heard about Sharon the Queen of St. martin and her $15 cell phone rental, and that I might be able ti go "International" on my Verizon plan for $3.99 for a month and get better rates, etc. Thanks for anyone who is thinking about answering me, and maybe you have some great inside info after all.

My T-Mobile service worked fine last November in the following islands, and should in others:
Aruba
Curacao
Sint Maarten/St Martin
It is a quad band Motorola and all I had to do was ask T-Mobile to turn on the service - no added monthly charges just the added cost for the roaming or whatever it was when used.

Verizon and T-Mobile both work in SXM. I am not sure about other carriers.. Depending on your plan, however, you may be charged a lot for roaming charges. You need to check that out.
If you want, going with Sharon Harris is a good way to go.. She has very reasonable prices and is very reliable.

FYI - House Hunters on HGTV had a show on last night about people looking for a house on St. Maarten/St. Martin. It will probably be running again soon. Just thought you may like to check it out since you are going soon -- was interesting to see the island.

Thanks Barb and others. I emailed Sharon and am getting a phone from her. It will be cheaper in the end, cuz of roamiing charges. I really don't want to get my calls. I just want a phone for emergencies and a couple of calls home.
Darn, I missed the H&G show on ST. Martin homes. Meant to tape it, but forgot. Not planning to buy anyway. But it's always fun to look.
