might have a difficult time getting my wife into a kayak at night. any way of seeing what's happening there at night from the shore?

no she can not see from shore. you can get a 2 person kayak though, so she would not be alone.

Actually there is a way to see from land.

The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico now offers night-time walking tours of Las Cabezas Nature Reserve and Laguna Grande (bio Bay). They don't seem to be advertising it, so you will need to call for details (787)- 722-5882 ext. 240

You walk along a boardwalk by the side of the bio bay. Not done this tour, but if kayaking is not possible, it's an option

I had done this kayak tour at night and I am not the bravest of people either. On a tour group you are very close to the boats, all in a line formation. You can see pretty well so the inability to see is not an issue. I also am not the strongest of paddlers so unfortunately my husband had to pick up my slack too. It was a very eventful trip. There is nothing to be afraid of and even my children had a great time. Your wife should not miss it. Hope this helps her decision.

You might want to consider kayaking in Vieques because you drive up to the biobay, get your kayak out, and then push it into the water and kayak for a short while (the whole thing is only about 1 1/2 hours). Fajardo is more difficult because you have to kayak for a long time through narrow channels before getting to the biobay. Or you could just consider the pontoon tour instead of using the kayak. She might feel more secure on the pontoon and from there you can definitely see the bioluminescence--although getting right into the water is even better!

vieques - i'm afraid it may be too far. we are staying in ocean park and are booked for the week. abe's sounds great but concerned about driving back to ocean park at night after kayaking.
how long is the biobay kayak tour in fajardo?

In Fajardo, it's about 1 1/2 hours of actual kayaking. If I remember correctly, we got there at 6, had a safety session to begin with, and actually got into the water around 6:30. We were done around 8:00 because the next trip started at 8:30. I would suggest doing the earlier one because when you start out, you will get to see the mangroves in the daylight and then it gradually gets darker. By the time we got to the biobay, it was completely dark and we could see the luminescence perfectly.
