Bio Bay Question

We will be staying at Fajardo in December and would like to go to Vieques for the BioBay. Can anyone tell me if there is any type of transpotation running after 6:00pm from Vieques to Fajardo? My husband finds out the BioBay and wants to go there at night for the incredible experience. However, we have already spent a lot of money for the hotel at Fajardo (can't cancel the deal now) and don't want to pay double to stay at Vieques for a night. We would like to find out if there is any private transportation that we can take at night after our tour. Please help.

There's another bioluminescent bay in Fajardo. That might be the best option for you. Check It's a great website for PR travel & has info on touring the biobays, including, I'm pretty sure, tour operators for the Fajardo bay. I also found this comment on the web from someone who visited that bay instead of the Vieques bay:
"There are 3 biobays in Puerto Rico

A: I didn't know how to get all the way to Vieques in a short amt of time without staying the weekend there. So instead last weekend I did the biobay tour near Fajardo (Las Croabas Lagoon). My hotel arranged the tour bus to pick me up at the hotel in San Juan and drive me to Fajardo. From there we met the rest of the group and went kayaking into the bay where the bioluminescence is.
There are 3 Bioluminescent Bays of Puerto Rico. Brilliance is measured by plankton population:
? Mosquito Bay in Vieques has 750,000 plankton per gallon
? Las Croabas Lagoon in Fajardo has 500,000 plankton per gallon
? La Parguera near Guanica has less than 300,000 per gallon

I thought it was wonderful and was very bright. It was amazing. We used Castillo Tours through the Ritz Carlton hotel. 787-728-2297 [email protected] $70 including transportation from my hotel to Fajardo."

Hi PRnative:
Thank you SO much for your info. This is very helpful. I will go find out more info about the biobay near Fajardo. This is probably my best option to experience it.
Thanks again.

Hi Shinban,

Did you go to the biobay? How was it? I'd love to find a closer biobay than Vieques. Also, do you know if tours pick up from hotels in San Juan or only Fajardo area?

I've been to the Las Croabas bio-bay with Mark from Caribe Kayak ( It was just my wife and me and our guide. You start by paddling through a mangrove forest with dozens of giant iguanas looking down on you from up in the trees. This opens up into the bay.

After dark, we got off the kayak and swam around in the water for a while - it was like swimming in a sea of pixie dust. Then we sat on the kayaks and watched for shooting stars.

Haven't been to Vieques - I've heard there are even more bio-things in the water there, but I can't imagine it would be a better experience.

One warning - bring some heavy duty bug spray - it gets really buggy after dark.

I don't think they have any transportation from SJ.
