Help! Fajardo or Vieques Bio Bay???
We are leaving for Puerto Rico in 10 days. We want to see a phosphorescent bay.We only have a few days post-cruise. Vieques seems difficult for one night. Is the bay near Fajardo a good choice. Checked moon chart-we can go at the best time.

bogelbtk, we also are leaving for Puerto Rico in a couple weeks. Will be staying at the Wyndham Condado Plaza. I would also like to hear about the bio bays. Is there one at Fajardo, I thought you had to go to Vieques. I am finding that the ferries do not stay late enough in the evening to see the bay at Vieques. Please help. Thanks!

I've found that there are actually 3 bays-1 in Southwestern PR, 1 near Fajardo, and 1 off Vieques Island. The one in Vieques is supposed to be the brightest. The one in the SW has the lowest concentration of glowing organisms. Farjardo is somewhere in the middle. Check the website- biobay.com Look at the moon phases for the dates you will be there-we rearranged our whole trip to be there at the best time. We've been to PR 3 times and are determined not to miss this experience this trip. We just want to know if its worth the EXTRA effort to make all of the plans necessary to go to Vieques or if Fajardo is a better idea given our short stay. I've posted on several sites-I'll let you know if I hear anything.

I've been to the Las Croabas bio-bay with Mark from Caribe Kayak (http://www.pinacolada.net/caribekayak/).
It was just my wife and me and our guide. You start by paddling through a mangrove forest with dozens of giant iguanas looking down on you from up in the trees. This opens up into the bay.
After dark, we got off the kayak and swam around in the water for a while - it was like swimming in a sea of pixie dust. Then we sat on the kayaks and watched for shooting stars.
Haven't been to Vieques - I've heard there are even more bio-things in the water there, but I can't imagine it would be a better experience.
One warning - bring some heavy duty bug spray - it gets really buggy after dark.

If you are in the San Juan area, the Fajardo bioluminescent bay will be your best bet. There is a company called The Kayak Rental that specilizes on trips to the Fajardo-Las Croabas bioluminescent bay. They will provide transfers to and from Fajardo (about a 45 minute drive) and will take you on an escorted kayak tour of the bay. I've done it and it was lots of fun. We then hung out after kayaking and had some beers. You can search for The Kayak Rental's website or check with your hotel concierge for more information.

There are no motor boats allowed in the area. Although sometimes they do go in. Only the Parguera bay allows glass boats. But the Fajardo- Las Croabas and Vieques are more spectacular. Always check the moon chart and bring long sleeves since you should not go into the water with suntan lotion or mosquito lotion as this kills the organism.
