if i were him i would dive from st. thomas. the diving will be excellent from jost van dyke or st. john but both islands are too cool to spend the day under water. st. thomas is very busy with lots of shopping and goings on which i'm thinking might not appeal so much to your son and diving from there will be almost as good. one company he might conider is waterworld - located at the havensight mall, which is where the ships dock. (i'm guessing he is cruising)

thanks virginia! he's not cruising, so he has a few days to spend on each island(he's travelling with someone who only snorkles, which is why he just wants to dive one day). in terms of dive sites, would jost van dyke or st. thomas be better?

Hi bobbieharv -
Most dive operators offer combination trips, where divers can dive and snorkelers can snorkel.
I'm currently planning a June vacation to the Caribbean (USVIs and BVIs) for our family of 4. DH and DD are certified divers.... DS and I just snorkel. We'll be doing combo. dive / snorkel trips with Chris Sawyer (sawerdive.vi) from St. Thomas, and Dive BVI (divebvi.com) from Tortola / Virgin Gorda. They are both rated very highly on scubaboard.com.
Overall, from what I have read thus far, most people seem to say that there is somewhat better diving in the BVIs than the USVI, but I'm sure that's debatable and, of course, specific location dive conditions change daily.
When I contact dive operators for combo. trips, I always ask if they can offer sites that are good for both divers and snorkelers.

i would agree with cawhite and say bvi diving is better. here's a well known site with info galore: www.scubamom.com click on the flowers and the angel fish.
scubamom posts on fodors also so if you had a specific question with her name in the title i think she'll see it or you can email her through her site.
ok i've just phoned my bestfriend the diver. she says its all about the clarity in bvi - somehow noticably better in bvi than usvi.
