Where to eat in Ottawa

I will be staying in Ottawa for 3 nights and 4 days and would like some suggestions of good places to eat on Ottawa or the surrounding area.
Not super expensive, no chains.
And what about food markets in Ottawa and Gattinieau or Hull .
Thanks !

Best overall kitchen: Domus in the by-ward's market. for the price, nothing can beat the amazing quality and refiness of the food. For 2, with 2 glasses of wine each and including taxes and tip, you can get by for around 150$

The Black Cat Cafe is also up there for a more reasonable price

Again in the market, The
Black Tomato (11 George) is quite nice and very popular

For the very best (and huge!) hamburgers, The Works will do the trick http://www.worksburger.com/lo/index....m/lo/index.cfm

for a quick and delicious lunch: La Bottega in the market. La Bottega is a Italian food store with a tiny restaurant in the back - amazing soups.

In Hull, I really like Le Palais du Vietnam 335, boulevard Alexandre-Taché. the food is as good as what I ate in Vietnam when I lived there some years ago.

Le Panaché (201 Eddy St, 819-777-7771) has a great reputation for classic French food at a very reasonable price. The restaurant is also quite small (around 10 tables) and don't judge the place by the look of the building.

If you like buffet, the Casino de Hull has a very good one for around 15$ - it's called Banco, I belive.

At the Casino you will also have access to the Baccara, one of the 4 CAA "5 diamonds" restaurant in Canada. Very pricey, though

I don't know the restaurant scene in Gatineau so I can,t help you.

It so happens that Ottawa Magazine has just published its list of the top 10 restaurants in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. None are inexpensive, but I would say that only Le Baccara is super expensive. Some may quibble at the rankings, or some of the omissions such as Signatures and the Urban Pear, but all of them are excellent choices.

1. Beckta Dining and Wine
2. Le Baccara (Gatineau)
3. Domus Café
4, Restaurant E18hteen
5. The Wellington Gastropub
6. Ambiente
7. Juniper Kitchen and Wine Bar
8. Social
9. Perspectives (Kanata)
10. Les Fougères (Chelsea)

They also list six new restaurants worth considering (I haven't tried any so can't comment):

Absinthe Café Resto Bar
Canvas Resto Bar
Allium
Benitz Bistro
Luxe Bistro
The Whalesbone Oyster House

The Byward Market in Ottawa has lots of restaurants and pubs, so good, some so-so. You'll be sure to find something to your liking there.

Gatineau has no market, but lots of restaurants. Two you might try are Par-fyum and Le Tartuffe. The Canadian Museum of Civilization has a restaurant with a fantastic view, Café du Musée, but I can't vouch for the food.

Good thing Laverendry posted, I had completely forgot to mention "E18hteen". Excellent fusion approach indeed. http://www.restaurant18.com/default.aspx

Many listed I have not tried yet but I did for some and Par-fyum and Social (especially) are way overpriced for the quality you get.

Juniper if fine but for the same price tag, Domus is the right choice, IMO.

Last spring ate at Sweetgrass Aboriginal Bistro in the Byward Market area and enjoyed it. Indian food at Haveli in same district is usually good too. Agree that the buffet at the Lac Leamy (formerly Hull) Casino is good - have had several nice lunches and a Sunday brunch there.
