Since you ask about hostels and not 4* hotels I asume you are on a budget.

If you fly into Vancouver, you can take a city bus with transfer to downtown for about $1.75.

From Vancouver, you can take a city bus with transfer to the ferry for the same.

Walk on to the ferry for about $10.

On the Victoria side a city bus to downtown cost $2.50.

Does not come any cheaper than that.

The website is:

www.bctransit.com for the busses.
www.bcferries.ca for ferries.

I do not know which hostel is best because I live in Victoria.

No my livingroom couch is not available.

We have a couple of hostels.

Have fun.

http://www.travelscout.com/victoria/hostels/hostels.html

This site lists the independants. There is a YHA affilliate not listed here.

By my reckoning the Douglas probably rents most of it's room by the hour if you know what I mean; nudge nudge, wink wink.

There are other cheap hotels. Try Travellers Inn.

This is Victoria of course, not Vancouver.

Visit this site for info on all Canadian Hostels. It gives you a map and directions to the hostel depending on how(plane, bus, etc.) you arrived in town. And all the other info needed including things to do in each city!

http://www.hihostels.ca
