Toronto by Ferry???
I am interested in visiting Toronto in August for a short weekend and airfare from Ohio is almost $500. Although it is a 4 1/2 hour drive looking at a map Lake Erie seperates us. Are there any Ferries from the US (maybe detroit or Buffalo) that can take you to Toronto??

Once you are in Buffalo, you are only an hour 20 minute drive to Toronto... you will be driving through the Niagara Wine region with dozens of wineries off of the QEW... make that portion of the drive a part of your weekend and you won't regret it... three hours to Niagara... lunch at a winery... short drive to TO for dinner and checkin... have fun!

Hi gary.
Maybe I misunderstood your post, but we drive from midtown Toronto to Buffalo all the time and it's exactly two hours to US Customs at the Peace Bridge and then however much more to get where you're going in Buffalo.
Do you actually do it in an hour and twenty minutes? If so, I'd love to know your route (or start and end points).

Mappy says the time from our house (Yonge/Eg) to the approximate neighbourhood of Dunn Tire Park (where we go for baseball) is 2 hours and 33 minutes. That seems about right since I drive above the speed limit.
Dunn Tire Park is on the Peace Bridge side of Buffalo (about 10 minutes from the bridge) so anything farther into town would take longer.
I'd love to know your itinerary, gary.
And aramis, I don't know the Whitby area. Are you closer to Buffalo than I am, to start with?

I find that the speed limit sometimes gets away from me... when I see 100 on the signs, I have a tendency to do a Canadian conversion ... actually ...staying with traffic often keeps you at around 70-75 mph making the trip less than 90 minutes... I would never encourage anyone to violate the posted limit.... Sooooo... stay at speed and move to the right lane... have fun in TO...

Hi aramis,
I'm at the 401 in about 10 minutes (15 if I stop at Starbucks for a travelin' coffee). If there's easy traffic I generally maintain about 110 to 115 kph (about 70 - 75 mph) and I don't think I've ever made it from home to US Customs in less than 2 hours.
I just didn't want RChandler to get the impression that he could make it in 90 minutes, just in case he's got time constraints.

Please keep in mind that the visitor is only headed to the tourist area of Toronto... that gave me the Gardiner as a final stopping point for illustration purpose... Mapquest list the distance from Buffalo to Toronto at 98.79 miles... at a speedy yet doable 72 mph one would arrive in Toronto in 1 hour 22 minutes and 30 seconds... allowing seven minutes and 29 seconds for the border and a short pee break (standing only, no sitting) the traveler would break the Toronto Finish Line at 90 Minutes...
Now goddesstogo, if I was headed to your house it might take longer... especially if it was prior to this post... in fact it could take years for me to find your home and that would certainly affect the calculations.... however if I can stay there on my next trip to Toronto, It would be worth the extra drive time... in fact, I'll leave now... see you in about a month...

How do you know that? I think he might be coming to visit my next-door neighbour.
In your calculations, you forgot to factor in getting stopped by a cop and the 8 minutes and 42 seconds it would take for him to write out the speeding ticket (if he's a fast writer). Then the next 20 or so kilometers where he'd be tailing you and you'd have to drive at 100. I think I recently passed the two of you as I was doing my 110! Next time I'll wave hi!
