st regis vs crowne plaza
i am planning a 3 night after cruise trip in vancouver. i seem to have narrowed my choice for a hotel to st regis or the crowne plaza hotel georgia. with the entertainment coupon i got a seemingly good rate at tha crowne plaza. the best i can get at the st regis looks to be with travelocity. there is only about a $150 usd difference. i love the location of the crowne plaza and would like to know if st regis is a short walk away. i am traveling with my mother who is 76 and can not walk very far, but wants to be near shopping. thanks!

cathy, I'm certainly no expert on Vancouver; I get there once or twice a year on business and try to stay over weekends because I like the place. So this is shallow impression rather than in-depth knowledge.
Vancouver's true and very nice downtown is west of Granville Street. East of Granville is a mixed bag, the Gastown tourist trap, China town, the downtown eastside, with the highest concentration of drug users and prostitutes in Canada, Yaletown, a warehouse district converting to artsy/trendy and some just shabby vaguely rundown areas. The hotels tend to be in this last area and give the impression that their main business purpose is the sale and serving of alcohol and provision of related entertainment, with the renting of rooms to tourists a secondary line of business.
Now the St. Regis may be a jewel that does not fit this stereotype. But I would just rather be two blocks west on Howe Street where I know the hotels are in the hotel business and the neighbourhood is nice. If I couldn't afford better, I might stay at one of these places east of Granville. But I wouldn't put my 83 year old mother in one of them.

As someone who lives in Vancouver, there really is no "wrong" side to Granville Street", but Ron does know what he's talking about when saying that the further east you walk of Granville Street is a different neighbourhood than the area west of it.
HOWEVER... the St Regis is located in a fine neighbourhood, in Vancouver's financial district. It's safe, central, etc... HOWEVER... the Crowne Plaza is definitely a step above the St Regis... it's across the street from the Hotel Vancouver and the Art Gallery, two of the most impressive buildings in Vancouver. It's definitely a classier block of Vancouver to stay in, even though the hotels are only a 2 minute walk apart.

To answer your question, yes, the St Regis is a short walk away. Vancouver's blocks are tiny. I honestly mean it when I say that it takes two minutes to walk from the St Regis over to the Crowne Plaza. If the difference is $150 US, go for the St Regis.

Ack! This is the last post, I promise!
I'm just thinking, the St Regis is on the corner of Seymour and Dunsmuir. One of the entrances to the Pacific Center Mall (an underground mall downtown), is at Dunsmuir and Howe - two blocks over. The Bay (oldest store in possibly the world), which is a large Canadian department store - they're located one block south of the St Regis.
Now, forgive me if I read your post, but were you saying that the St Regis is $150 more than the Crowne Plaza, or is it the other way around? Stay at whichever one's the cheapest, however, the Crowne Plaza is indeed nicer, but not $150 US nicer. I'd say, go to whichever is cheaper.
Hope this helps.

robyn, thank you for all the info and for being so thoughtful! if i did the math right, the crowne plaza is $150.00 more for the 3 nights. this is the total difference including the 17% taxes. so, it sounds like the location of the st. regis is almost as good as the crowne plaza, now i just need to decide if i want to spend $50.00 more per night for a classy hotel. i don't mind a plain jane hotel as long as it is clean and the walls are not too thin. lol thanks again
