restaurants in Calgary

We will be in Calgary for three days during the Stampede. What do you suggest for restaurants? No chains! We like atmosphere, good food, regional, etc. and all price ranges. Thanks.

Hi Di,
Calgary has a lot of great restaurants. If you want upscale seafood try Catch or Murietta's. If you want great atmosphere and fresh, regional cuisine try River Cafe. It's on Prince's Island in a park setting. All 3 are in the downtown area.

Last week, I had a wonderful dinner at the Delta Bow Valley dining room. Very laid back (I was in jeans and a t-shirt, cleaned and pressed but not fancy, this is Calgary after all), excellent service but by no means cheap. I like the Owl's Nest at the Westin. Osteria something or other (someone help me out here) in Kensington. There are wonderful Indian restaurants. I haven't been to any but my daughter has and raved about them and I remember last year when Anthony Hopkins was in Calgary, he said it was the best Indian food he had ever had. Where are you staying? That may help as Calgary is pretty spread out and traffic can be heavy during peak times and during stampede.

I noticed once more when in Calgary last week, that the infrastructure is not adequate to accomodate the traffic. JMHO.

The Conservatory at the Delta Bow Valley has excellent food but little or nothing in the way of atmosphere. Osteria de Medici is pricey Italian, very good. I agree that Calgary has many great Indian restaurants, Tandoori Hut and Maurya in Kensington are both good. I like Rajdoot on 4th Street for food and atmosphere.

Try to get to the free chuckwagon breakfast at the olympic square downtown, not a big breakfast but a fun idea and plenty of entertainment. Also many of the malls offer free
breakfasts and barbecues around town.
