Places to Stay near Annapolis Royal, Pictou, Charlottestown, and Cape Breton Island?
Hi all--
My travel plans are firming up, and I'm looking for great places to stay in or around Annapolis Royal, Pictou, Charlottestown, and Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Would love something unusual, interesting, or historic. We'll be there in September...
Thanks!

In Annapolis Royal Bread and Roses is a beautiful Inn www.breadandroses.ns.ca

I would definitely recommend the following:
In Smith's Cove - just a few minutes south of Annapolis Royal, we stayed at the Harbourview Inn. Clean and comfortable, very nice and helpful owners. http://www.theharbourviewinn.com/
In Pictou, we stayed at the Custom's House Inn. Great Brick building - very historic, clean room with big windows. Nice tiled bath. Downstairs use to be a pub but not this season - you do have breakfast there and great old brick/tavern style. This is right off the water and a quick walk down to the wharf area that has restuarants. Nice town with very nice people.
In Baddeck, we stayed at the Dunlop House - owned by Telegraph Inn. The house sits right on the water and very quiet and peaceful. There are only 4 rooms - and the public space is great too. Our room was clean and pretty. Right in town, walk to resturants, the church with music and very close (almost across the street) from the Bell Museum.
Have a great trip.

LizBish,
We are also going to be staying in Pictou in Sept.. Glad to see Tanya recommend the Consulate Inn, which is where we are staying. Looks nice. Any other suggestions in Pictou? (I. E. Not to miss sights or fun places to eat/drink?)

On Cape Breton, we stayed at the Keltic Lodge in Ingonish - historic, lovely property. Even if you don't stay there, be sure to take the hike to Middle Head Pennisula. We also spent a night in Baddeck at the Silver Dart. I was worried about this one before we got there but it was just great. They have a laundomat on site (bring your own soap!) that came in quite handy. It has a lovely view and is nicely situated.

September is a beautiful time to explore Pictou County and its surrounding areas. In Pictou there are several charming spots to roam. In the downtown make sure you stop by Carver's. If during the day you may be lucky enough to see a class in action. If you enjoy Scottish heritage, stop in to see Frances at Whigmaleeries! She is a wealth of information plus has every kind of Scottish gift going. Just down the road from her is a tearoom which is a great spot to relax. If you enjoy Coronation St., drop in to see Debbie at the Consulate Inn - she has some great crafts that reflect the charm of the show. New Scotland days runs until September 15th. It is a celebration of our first Scottish settlers who left Scotland and arrived in Pictou on the 15th of Sept. Pictou Lodge is just outside of the Town but a beautiful place to have a relaxing dinner - you might even get a chance to see some seals frolicking off the shoreline. If you want an authentic Irish brew, head into New Glasgow and join Carmel and Wayne at the Dock. The Cafe Italia just around the corner has great food at very reasonable prices! If you are searching for a simple cup of coffee and a great muffin, try the Coffee Bean! Another spot with great food is the Thistle Bar and Grill.
There is so much in this area to see! If you are heading to Cape Breton from here, take the Sunrise Trail exit at Sutherland's River just outside of New Glasgow - Exit 27 left. Hug the coastline until you get to Antigonish. It is a beautiful drive. Cribbon's Point Marina has a great little seafood place and Silver Glen Resort should still be open for lunch. Of course, Gabrieaus' Bistro in Antigonish is a favorite!

Bethie - Thought if you were in Pictou on this day you might be interested in the following:
Scotland Days in Pictou will end with the Great Big Sing. It will take place this year on Sunday, Sept. 17. The concert, featuring the Great Big Sing Festival Choir and guests, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pictou United Church. The concert program will follow its usual pattern, blending the sacred and secular. The music each year is new and fresh with a distinct Scottish or Celtic flavour. Special guests will include Fleur Mainville on fiddle, and Ross McVicar on guitar, and the St.Mary's Handbell Choir.
Each year, the Pictou District Honour Choir joins the program. This outstanding ensemble of young voices from the schools of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board will join the Great Big Sing Festival Choir in several numbers. They will also make a major contribution to the program in their own right. In addition, there will be lots of audience participation in the hymns and songs of the program.
“This is a concert for the whole family, for the whole community,” said Gerry Punke, one of the organizers.
For further information, contact Punke at 752-1297. Tickets for the Great Big Sing are $8 each and will be available at the Box Office, deCoste Entertainment Centre, 485-8848 and Pictou United Church, 485-8081.

Last summer (August 2006) we stayed at the Customs House in Pictou - great historical building and our room was simple but it did have refrigerator and microwave)and very clean. The owner was nice and helpful and the town is very quaint.
We also stayed in Baddeck as a base for Cape Breton. Great town! We stayed at the Dunlop Inn - very nice room, clean, right on the water, walkable to everything in town. Also saw several bald eagles all around the perimeter of the town.
We also stayed down in Digby (south of Annapolis Royal) at the Harbourview Inn. Again, simple room but nice and clean and owner was very helpful. We would definitely stay there again.
Enjoy your trip!
