Montreal: to do and where to stay
We've never been to Montreal: we're 2
late 50's people. Any suggestions: we're
interested in cultural activities, historical sites, gardens...
We'll be there mid-July.
Any hotel areas to stay in; or hotel
suggestions in the $85-120(US) range?
Any ideas welcome Thanks, Bemplod

To start with, I would suggest browsing all the Montreal postings here, go into the text search and just type in Montreal restaurants, get lots of ideas then narrow it down.
try this site to get you started on your research:

Montreal is a great city, full of history and culture. If you can make it, I believe the Jazz Festival is at the end of June/start of July...a GREAT time to be in Montreal! (Ive been there twice during the Jazz Festival).
There are a lot of cultural things to do/see in Vieux Montreal, as well as the Biodome among many other things.
I stayed at the Queen Elizabeth hotel the last time I was there (a Fairmont Hotel)--and would stay there again without hesitation.
Check out this great website for more details on Montreal: www.bonjourquebec.com

More kudos for the Omni. Great location, great hotel. I don't know if it will meet your rate requirements, particularly during the Jazz festival.
If not, the Residence Inn by Marriott has BIG rooms that are definitely in that price range and has a breakfast rooms with a quite decent continental breakfast. (the rates are lower 'cause it lacks overhead like a a restaurant). The Residence Inn is a block from the Omni, across the street from the Peel metro station.
The Marriott Chateau Champlain is also quite nice, but the location isn't quite as good (3 blocks south of the Omni, connected to the Montreal Canadiens arena and the train station), but it has indoor access to the Bonaventure metro station and large (if rather upscale generic) rooms.
