My husband and I will be visiting Quebec city in late June 2007, and would like recommendations on not-too-expensive places to stay. Could be a B&B or hotel. Almost anything. We would like our own bathroom. I would like to spend about $150US or less per night (1 or 2 nights). It could be outside the city - we will have our car so parking would be needed. We don't mind walking into the old city, or maybe a bus is available if we get tired? One person recommended staying in Levis and taking the ferry. Any ideas?

We stayed at Manoir Des Remparts in 2005, and the location was fantastic. Price for two is about $100CAD. Breakfast is worth it, but nothing special. The owner was very gracious and helpful.

Manoir de L'Esplanade looks charming. Their web site quotes rooms from $89-129 CAD.

Try and stay inside or just outside the old city if possible. The James Thompson is a very pleasant, well located b&b. There are several others on the same street.

Last year I stayed at two B & B's on Rue St Ursule and can recommend both. James Thompson, the owners do not allow you to wear shoes inside as the house is very historic and well preserved. I go barefoot at home inside so it was no problem to me, they will give you slippers to wear. They are very hospitable and breakfast is great.
Across the road is Chez Hubert, Andrew the owner is from Vancouver and is also very hospitable, his house is also very homely and has a nice lounge for guests.
There are many more but these two are right in the old town and close to the Grand Allee, which is outside the walls but a lovely boulevard of interesting cafes and architecture. I will be there again in early june and can't wait to visit this beautiful city again.

The view from the roof top patio at night of the Chateau and river\lower town is priceless. I think it is in the best location anywhere.

The trip from Levy via the ferry is very cool visually also but you can always do that for a side venture.

Now I'm thinking we would like to stay outside the walls of the old city, since we will have our car with kayaks on top (and I hear you can't drive into the old city, right?). Perhaps a B&B that is on a quiet street within a half mile of the walls of the old city... Any suggestions?

You certainly can drive within the walls, as there are only a few pedestrian-only streets. Most streets are one-way, but there is no difficulty taking a car in and out of the old city. You might, however, want to look for a B&B or hotel with off-street parking.

We stayed at the Chateau Laurier Hotel and liked it. It was not much more than $100 per night ($110 if I remember well). Location was awesome, right at the gates of the old walled city, next to Quebec's Parliament building, facing Place George-V and trendy shopping and dining establishments. Our room was small but we did not spend much time there anyway ....(more detailed impressions below)
