Kingston-What not to miss

We will be in Kingston, Ontario July 2 for 3-4 days for a car show. What sights SHOULD we see in this short period of time. I have gotten the tourist info book but would like your input.

We really enjoyed the Thousand Island Boat Cruise. (2 Adults and a teeneager). You buy your ticket at a souvenir shop down by the Radisson hotel. It was VERY windy though so tie your hair back. Also, the bathroom on board was creepy.

I wouldn't miss Fort Henry, especially the Wednesday night Sunset Ceremony.

If you want to cruise the Thousand Islands, I'd drive to Gananoque and take the cruise from there. It's about a 30 minute drive from Kingston. If you don't have time for a cruise, take the ferry across to Wolfe Island and back. It leaves from downtown Kingston.

I might also consider a day trip away, perhaps to Jones' Falls on the Rideau Canal or a day in Prince Edward County visiting the villages and wineries there. Tale the Bath Road to Glenora and cross by ferry.

I agree with the 1000 Island boat cruise. If you drive to Gananoque, you get more cruising among the islands and less of the lake.

I really enjoyed the Kingston Penitentiary Museum. I think part of that was I read the book The Convict's Lover during my trip. The book was written by a local writer who had found a bunch of actual letters written between a convict of the penitentiary and a young girl in the village (it was illegal in those days to communicate with prisoners).

Be sure to do lunch or dinner at Chez Piggy!

The book launch party for The Convict's Lover was held in the prison museum.

How are you getting to Kingston? I like to go through Prince EDward County and take the ferry at Glenora.

A vist to Cook's General Store on the main street (Brock?) in downtown Kingston is a must, like stepping back in time. You can get all sorts of interesting picnic things and go down to the park by the harbour for a lovely break from sight-seeing.

Thanks all for your input. We do want to do the 1000 Island Boat tour and Fort Henry.

toedtoes: Where is Chez Piggy? Is it downtown?
Also, the Kingston Penitentiary Museum sound interesting too.

BAK: We are driving from Denver, I know a long drive, but we are driving one of the cars in the show. We are going to Detroit then across to Canada that way. I'm not familiar with Canada driving that way.

LJ: We are going downtown, so we will check out Cook's General Store.

Sue - yes, it's right on Princess St. They have a website (chezypiggy dot com) that tells about the restaurant and the bakery.
