Is 5 nights in Vancouver or Whistler too much?

I am trying to get the scheduling down for our week long (7 or 8 nights) trip to Vancouver and Whistler in June/July. We are going to use Marriott points and they have a special where if you redeem 4 nights then the 5th is free. I am being greedy and wanting to take advantage of this but am worried that 5 nights in one of these will shortchange the other and we will run out of things to do in the place we are staying the longest.

Is this too many nights in either one of these? If you were going to do this which would you choose to spend the 5 nights in. I am leaning toward Whistler because we can stay in the Residence Inn and be more comfortable with DD ( 1 year old) but DH says we will get bored and is voting for Vancouver on the longer stretch. Any thoughts?

I would spend the longer amount of time in Vancouver--more variety of things to do.

Quite agree-especially with a little one along.

I totally agree . Unless you are going to do a lot of hiking, I think you would get bored in Whistler.
There is so much you can do in Vancouver to keep busy.
Have a good time there.

another vote for vancouver - 2 nights in whistler is plenty unless avid hiking fans.
if you think 5 days is too much in vancouver, you could always take a ferry day trip to one of the islands.

OK...Vancouver for 5 nights it is. Would the ferry trip to one of the islands require renting a car once there or could we explore on foot?

You could go to Victoria and wander around easily without a car, if you want to stay in the city. Victoria is a really great place to visit.

The ferry to Bowen Island docks in downtown Snug Cove but you can see it all in 10 minutes after that you'd need a vehicle.

It's possible to take transit into Lower Gibsons from Langdale but again it's a small place-on a steep hill too.

Transit to Steveston Village in south Richmond is an option, places to wander around/eat in/a great Sunday Market fish for sale on the dock weekends/Gary Park nearby.

I should have added-the Ferry trip over to the Sunshine Coast really is gorgeous I never tire of it-maybe you could just go over and then back-40 minutes each way.

Hi als1017

I have a different opinion from the previous poster having visited Bowen Island with no car... For one such as myself who appreciates leisurely hikes, there are some pleasant trails that lead to a lake through temperate rain forest from Snug Cove that kept me enjoying Bowen Island sans auto for a few hours (after a pleasant lunch outside in Snug Cove). Perhaps being from urban eastern Canada, I just enjoy being in West Coast vegetation though.

Have fun in one of my favourite parts of the world! DANIEL

Thank you for all your suggestions. We got a little sidetracked with planning but are back on it this weekend. And will probably have a few more questions then!

Thanks a bunch!
