Now, don't discount Dartmouth. It is after all the City of Lakes (23 of them in fact). There is a beautiful park you can enjoy called Shubie Park with an interpretation centre which shows you how the locks in the canal system works. The Canal in the 1800's connected Halifax Harbour with the Bay of Fundy (70 miles worth) There is also Eastern Passage and the fisherman's village which is a nice spot to enjoy lunch and a walk along the water. Outside of Dartmouth is Lawrencetown Beach - not the warmest but usually great wave action and lots of surfers. The Black Cultural Centre on Route 7 is a great place to visit and see highlights of their early ancestors who came to Nova Scotia. The Dartmouth waterfront has Alderney Landing which hosts a farmer's market as well as a Theatre which will have performances throughout the summer. On your drive to Lawrencetown Beach stop and visit the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum. As well there is a tea room just before you come to the beach - stop and enjoy the view and a cup of tea!

Although most of what is mentioned about is outside of Dartmouth (Lawrencetown is a great beach!!), I have to concur with the recommendation on the Black Cultural Centre. Is is very well done and very interesting but still, a good distance from the bridge that connects you to the downtown part of Halifax.
