Another suggestion for finding a poster is to type their name in the search box and reply to one of their old posts. At least that would work for me...
Or... they could just happen to open your post like I just did...
Reply to this post and I would be more than happy to answer any question you might have.
Sincerely,
Daniel

Old Montreal is pretty quiet, especially in January when an arctic chill can hover over the city. I'm sadly not really an expert on accommodation in Vieux Montreal.
Quiet, groovy...that's an interesting combination. Do you mean for an accommodation, restaurant, lounge-nightspot or all the above? I'd recommend checking out a restaurant on one of the side streets of le Plateau Mont-Royal district like la Raclette or le P'tit Plateau...

Daniel, thanks for the info. I was thinking a small, groovy hotel. As for restaurants I'll start with L'express and take it from there. I haven't been to Montreal in 8 years. Is the Monkland Tavern still good?
Sorry to be less than discreet about my curiosity about you. I enjoy your posts and have always wondered who you are.
Best wishes,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie
I'm a 37-year-old chemistry teacher and have lived in Montreal for about 11 years. I'm a Canadian permanent resident and U.S. citizen but was born in Kenya and have also lived in Nigeria (over summer vacation while in university) and the United Kingdom (4 years) as a youth. I enjoy my job tremendously and although the social life goes out the door during the school year, I am very thankful for the vacation time. This time allows me to use my modest earnings for what makes me most happy: travel, especially train travel. After the trip, I love writing a travel report as you probably have seen.
Unfortunately, I've never been to Monkland Tavern, but thought if you like tapas, Barraca on Mont-Royal Avenue might fit the ambience you're looking for.
Thank you for enjoying my reports and I hope you have a wonderful time in Montreal!
Daniel (presently in Washington, D.C. with family, where I went to high school and Junior high)

Wow, small world.
Firstly to Stephanie : I'm obviously not Daniel Williams but I have stayed in a rather nice boutique Hotel in Old Montreal on a couple of ocassions when travelling there on business. Its called the Hotel Nelligan. Google search it and look it up. You may like it.
To Daniel Williams : Just read your mini-bio and realised that I'm around your age (a couple of years older than you) and was also born in Kenya (now living in Canada for the past 26 years). Long shot but we might even know each other, LOL! How long did you live in Kenya for and did you go to Primary school there for any length of time ? I went to St. Marys for 11 years and lived in Nairobi.

I was in Kenya from 1971-1975; I was only 4 years old when we left... I went to Riverside Nursery and have only the vaguest memories of this time period. (In fact my only memory of interaction with other schoolkids is being poked in the eye with a stick, so unless that was you... LOL... I wouldn't remember.) My brother David is 2 1/2 years older so perhaps your paths crossed? My Dad was a journalist with the Voice of America at the time, covering horrific events like those in Idi Amin's Uganda (was in the same room with Idi Amin at a press conference in the early 70s).

Mathieu,
Thank you for the hotel suggestion.
I must have been mad to consider visiting Montreal in the winter for leisure. I have come to my senses, so I'll wait until summer. I haven't been to the Jazz festival in years, maybe that's a plan.
