Unfortunately, in the Banana Republic dictatorship that is Canada, we are not allowed to have U.S.- style efficiently managed transportation companies.

Air transportation is a total scam in Canada.

They will close down West Jet very soon.

Where does Air Canada put the money from its enormous state-sanctioned market power? In the hands of the travelling public? No! In the obscene salaries that it pays its top management.
Same goes for cable TV. We are not allowed to have the good cable channels that Americans have. Why? To protect the official state "cultural workers"!

I've just have enough of this Cuba of the North!!!!!

Well said Jack! As a fellow Canadian, I am quite pissed off about the absolute control our beloved "democratic" government has over its citizens and non-governmental institutions. Air Canada keeps its service down and its prices sky high: and they can do whatever they want given government control and thus lack of competition while Canadian citizens pay the highest taxes probably in any free nation. Well anyway, I would say try wetjet, I have heard decent things about their service.
I had to cancel a trip to Spain using Air Canada on May 1 due to an unfortunate financial issue that came up. A real drag of course, but I bit the bullet, canceled my ticket and took a $270 loss being told that i would be credited $970 on my credit card by Air Canada. Well, it's been two and a half weeks and still no credit applied to my card. I called my agent to inquire who informed me that it is now normal for Air Canada not to do so until six to eight weeks after a ticket has been cancelled.
I consider that unethical as I NEED the money. What company waits for two months before they give back the money that you are owed? Sickening. This country becomes more of a joke by the day and our pathetic, bumbling government IS a dictatorship. But, why would we take to the streets and DEMAND changes? I hate this palce more and more, it's an embarassment.
I WANT MY MONEY BACK...

Why aren't people taking to the streets??? Because there is only one thing that Canadians hate more than the present government: the Quebec separatists!

Jack I am a Quebecker and the situation in this province is absolutely disgusting. Only in our parliamentary system does a party (the PQ) form a majority government with the minority of popular votes. At least in the USA they have their "checks and balances." But now that fucking moron landry gets to waste our tax dollars on bloating his cabinet and storing secret funds in Toronto bank accounts for his future election promises. Its a total joke. As for Chretien, he really needs to go. I'm pretty sure the guy is senile.

I think you are all getting off topic a little here.

You should be ashamed of yourselves, being Canadian is awsome. You all sound like you want to be yanks!!! You couldn't pay me enough to live in that hell hole. And if you like in Quebec or Ontario don't whine about your seats in parlement, try living in NB, we have not enough to make any difference, but oh well that is our systom. Move if you don't like it here.
Melissa,
Why don't you defend your argument rather than the typical "if you don't like it here then move" comment. It's simplistic responses like yours that irk me, people who don't try to make our country a better place because they are apathetic when the government isn't helping this country beocme greater than it is. This country IS NOT as good as it can be...it has gone downhill and my spending does not go as far as it did even five or six years ago. Perhaps you are content sitting at home and not travelling to broaden your horizens but I want to travel and the state of Air Canada is not good which prevents me from travelling.
"But, oh well, that is our system"
C'mon. Get involved, get a voice and try to improve things. You sound sooo Canadian/

Melissa,

As a Canadian, I am proud to accept the fact that Canada was voted the best country to live in, and it may be so. However, we still have a HUGE amount of problems. Medicare, overtaxation, undemocratic systems of government (and while I am no radical, I think that a republican system is much more accountable to the people than the current parliamentary system is where the majority party can pass any law, even though they do not get a majority of popular support). Our declining dollar, unfair government intervention in business practises and Chretien is just out in the wind and does not know what the hell he is doing. It is time for new leadership for Canada. I have no problem with being Canadian, but I don't think the fact that I am exercising my perfectly democratic rights in criticizing our government should make my actions in any way shameful. Do you honestly like having to pay more than 50% of your income to the government? Is that in any way fair?? I sure as hell don't.
Melissa,
I apologize for the rant I made toward you in my last post and realize this is a travel forum, etc.. But this thread started out with the topic of 'budget flights' and our lack of budget flights is in a great part due to our government. I am also a proud Canadian but do not see a good future as a Canadian with this government. Do you really believe that the $24 security tax is justified? It is, simply put, a tax gouge and we do not know where that money is really going and will never know the truth with this government.
I am also a cynic with all politicians and are not sure if any of the other parties will be any better.
XXX - you said a lot that I agree with.
I just want to be able to afford to travel again but the current situation is not allowing me to do this. I do not want to be limited to only travel within western Canada which is where the situation is now.
End of my rant , have a great long weekend!

Hey Melissa!
yOU WRITE: "As a Canadian, I am proud to accept the fact that Canada was voted the best country to live in..."

Excuse me??? VOTED??? By WHO? By a bunch of socialists bureaucrats at the UN!!! That's who!

Don't try to make it sound like Canada was voted the best country by Conde Nast's, Fortune or Barron's!!!

BTW, this year Norway, this other "socialist paradise"(which would be a very poor country, if not for the North Sea oil), was "voted" best by this group of yo-yos.

Pssst...hey Jack,
That was 'xxx' who made the comment, not Melissa. And, you would judge Conde Nest as a reliable source for best places to live in the world. Don't they cater to exclusive upper class tastes only?
BTW Jack not everybody judges a place by what Fortunes or Barrons say. I understand wealth is important, of course, but I would prefer to live in Spain over an outrageously expensive place like London due to the lifestyle AND cheaper cost. Just my opinion. I guess I don't desire a Mercedes/cavier lifestyle. Too pretentious for me.
Ciao!

As I have been looking for a cheap flight for my son to fly to the US from Nova Scotia this summer, I was interested to read some of the responses under budget flights, (the message from JO).... For us living in eastern Canada (the Maritimes) it is even more difficult to find reasonable airfare. Upon checking out American airlines, I didn't find any real bargains there either. Finally, through Travelcuts, I was able to find a flight for my son at a very reasonable cost.

I agree with Melissa in that some of you have gotten totally off track - this is not a political forum.

Loved your replies EH! and Esser.

Why not go off-topic. There are no Canadian political discussion forums so why not have one?
