Applying for a Canadian Passport - Regular form/short form?????

I need to renew my passport, I have a Canadian passport that will expire later this week. I have two forms, a regular form and short form. I know I can request my old passport back, but I have read on the regular form that if I have an expired passport I do not need to submit it with the application. I didn't know that there are now two different forms, the last time I applied for a passport was in 2004 and I used to regular form, which was the only form available at that time. I know that there are a few more questions on the regular form and I need a guarantor to sign for me, this isn't a problem. I am debating if I should let my passport expire and then apply, or if I should just apply using a short form. Have any fodorites used the regular form [once their passport has expired] recently? What are the pros and cons. I am determined to keep the passport that I have which will expire this week simply because this is the first time (and prehaps the last time) I will ever fill a passsport with entry/exit stamps. If I get to keep it without the passport office cancelling it, that would be even better. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't renewed my passport since the changes but you will get your old passport back with the corners clipped so do whatever is easier for you.

sorry 'bout that; as I was saying:

Picked up envelope at postal outlook - regular renewal form
Went and got new pics taken
Went to local gov't office and was interviewed by agent
Put 87$ on my Visa card; gave in my old passport and went on
my way - no guaranteer required for a renewal.
In a month or so my new passport plus my 'clipped' old
passport will come by registered mail.

Not sure if that helps you but it seemed simple to me.

I've replied on the lounge. Also there is another post on the Canada forum about keeping old passport.

Although 'helpmeplease' seems to have left the building, I
am going to finish off the thread ~ today I received my
new passport by priority post. It came within two weeks of
the application.

My old passport was included ~ it has two punch holes down
the open side of the book so you can easily see your stamps
but the passport has been cancelled.

Still miffed at having to pay $87 for it! lol

immimi - I know what you mean - my daughter lives in the States and only had to pay $75 (because she mailed in the application) and it is good for TEN years.
