Australian Open hotel recommendation

My husband and I will be attending next year's Australian Open. We would appreciate any suggestions for good hotels within walking distance of the venue, and any other tips from those who have been there/done that!
Thanks.

Hilton in East Melbourne, The Langham on Southbank, lots of players stay at Sofitel. Hotels in CBD and Southbank are all within walking distance.

Some years back we stayed in the Rendezvous Hotel. It's across the road from Flinders Street Station and has a tram stop almost directly across the road.

It was a comfortable walk from the venue - most important at times that crowds are arriving / leaving; by the time we'd have got to the top of the queue for a tram, we were back at the hotel.

There's a free tourist tram that runs around the Melbourne CBD - see http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/melb...0#.UzqYZKK6m4o It's a convenient way to travel the city if you have any spare time in Melbourne.

We also picked up some lunch & snacks from cafes close to the hotel before we went to the venue each day; food there was quite expensive, and of limited selection. This may have improved in recent times - maybe someone with more recent experience can advise of this. Di

I like the Lindrum but it's often very pricey. It's on Flinders St., so at least on the edge of the CBD towards the area where the tennis is. The hotel prices often go up when there are events like this.

We've stayed at the Stamford Plaza, which was pretty good. Walking distance, but that hill seemed enormous after some of those late night matches finished.

This year we stayed at Southbank and got the tram back.

A couple of years ago we estimated that standard 3 - 4 star hotel rooms increased by about $100/night during the tennis.
