Where to stay at Kakadu
Hello,

We are going to Darwin for one night (Novotel) then we will drive to Litchfield and stay one night there. Then, we will drive to Kakadu and stay four nights. Then, we will go back to Darwin.

My questions are :

1. During the Dry, do we need a 4wd (Jim Jim Falls...) ?
2. Should we stay at the same place at Kakadu or should we move (2 nights + 2 nights). Is it possible to rent a tent or is it possible to find budget room ?
3. Where could we stay near Litchfield (Jungle motel...)?

Any suggestions will be appreciated and maybe another place to visit near Kakadu because I don't know if 4 days are too much.

Thanks,
Olivier

I would be going on a small overland safari if I was you unless you want real comfort then I would stay at the hotel which is in the shape of a crocodile - name I can't remember. You will miss a lot without local knowledge and without a 4 wheel drive but there is lots to see and perhaps there are good tours available out there. Its been a while since I was there.

The hotel shaped liked a crocodile is the Gagudju Crocodile Hotel, in Jabiru. Another good choice in Jabiru is the Kakadu Lodge (a recent name change from the Frontier Lodge). Near the Lodge is Kakadu Holiday Park, which has comparatively inexpensive 4-person dorm rooms. We stayed in one of those, and it was fine. We have also stayed in a campervan at the Holiday Park campsites, but I don't think that there is anywhere where you can rent a tent.

I don't think that 4 days is too much to spend at Kakadu, particularly if you head to the south part of the Park to see things like the Yellow Water billabong. We stayed at the very attractive Cooinda Lodge there, but it was pricey and above our normal budget.

You will need a 4WD to get to Jim Jim Falls and I understand that you also need to swim to get to the falls. You can take a tour from either Cooinda or Jabiru if you prefer.
Cooinda and Jabiru are only about 30 minutes apart, so you could stay in either. We camped at both Cooinda and Jabiru and must say that the park at Jabiru is much much better.
Apart from taking the boat ride on Yellow Waters, there is also an interesting boat trip on the East Alligator River which is run by the local aboriginal community.
There are some camping grounds in Litchfield but I can't recall any other accommodation. Batchelor is the closest (very small) town - it has a motel and one or two camping grounds with cabins. We can recommend the camping ground next to the motel - facilities were good and very clean.
Hope you have a great holiday.
