Snazzy,
another vote for the Antartica center --I had zero interest in visting this from a personal level; I just went there to check it out for clients, and was pleasantly surprised how it held my interest. Another factor in it's favor is that it's SO close to the airport; so you can visit, drop off your rental car and then catch your flight.

Hi Chenoa,
Another posting from me, boasting Nelson! AT SatMkt, look for condiments: Village Green,Hellish relish, Bentwood Barn (Mapua?). Handmade jewelry transports well. Great guide on area touring ($25?) to plan your next visit: and check out "I" info ctrs everywhere! Very useful. In Chch, novelty chocolates (I first discovered in AU!) by Bloomsberry.com should be in gift shops

Becareful on buying the honey if you intend to take it home with you. Depending on where you live, customs may not let it go through.
Manuka honey can be found in lots of lotions and such. They can be brought back.
Never did find the tawari honey someone mentioned.
"The Tin Shed" was a favorite of people traveling with me last week.
DF Souvenirs in Queenstown and Christschurch was also popular. They had coupons floating around for 5% and 7% off purchases.
Be sure to taste the P & L Fizzy (soda-like drink). Liked the original better than the "extra dry" which had less citrus flavour in it.
I found that you need to shop around but sometimes, if a little shop has something you like, you might want to buy it because you may not find the exact style, color, etc. in other places.
Lots of souvenir places in Christchurch and Queenstown. I'd read that Q was cheaper than C but I ended up buying about equal amounts in both towns.

Hi Snazzy,
Which customs are you referring to? The NZ side or your homecounty side? My country doesn't forbid honey as far as I'm aware. What's "the tin shed"? Where do you get discount coupons for the DFS?

Hi, Chenoa,
Not sure which customs... we were going onto another country before going to U.S. but a tour guide said we should probably not buy honey to take with us because it probably wouldn't make it through customs...
Coupons came from the hotels where we stayed in both Christchurch and Queenstown. I think they are also in shopper / flyer ads. Will see if my husband remembers for sure.
The Tin Shed was on the way to Milford Sound, I think... will have to check my notes later... have a severe case of very little sleep at the moment... a total of 8 hours spread over three days... gotta go to sleep, now.

Chenoa, I dind't find anyone place that was better than another. Just keep your eyes open for differnet things in different areas. Queenstown is very touristy and so more expensive ( I think). I don't think it was open 24/7. It seemed to close up early the same as everywhere else.
We did some shopping in Picton before getting on the ferry and we really liked the shops there and the prices were good.
A lot of the gift shops really aren't too expensive and have a good selection of gifts.
