Romantic Restaurants in Wellington N.Z.

I would like to pre-book for Valentine's dinner. Does anyone know of a romantic mid-priced restaurant in Wellington? We enjoy things such as chicken, pork or beef, nicely presented--don't require or appreciate more exotic foods. Thanks for your help.

A. Benson

You might try the Cafe Paradiso in Courtney Place. It's rather chic and serves French and Italian cuisine. If not that, Courtney place has a plethora of international restaurants and cafe's. Something for every taste. Any Wellington taxi driver can take you there.

Thank you so much for your help, John. We'll have a car, and I'm sure we'll be able to find it.

A. Benson

Well if you have a car consider driving on around Oriental Bay. There are some nice restaurants there, the first on an old tugboat, the second in what was a band rotunda nearby the fountain. Further on there is a Pub at the old “slip” the food is not marvellous but next to it is a delightful restaurant on the water. Unfortunately the name escapes me but it looks out over Evans Bay.

Just be aware of the New Zealand drink/drive laws. Not everybody is as fortunate as I am to have a wife who is allergic to alcohol.
Hi
Just a quick update on Paradiso - I'm afraid it is no more. They had a fire some time ago, and have reopened as a tapas bar called Hummingbird. The food is still good.
I would recommend two relatively new restaurants - Anise in Cuba Street or Capitol at the end of Courtenay Place. Both are getting excellent reviews.
For less exotic food, Vista on Oriental Parade is a lovely setting and I think Tangata is referring to Eden in Evans Bay.
There are plenty of restaurants in the central city (highest ratio in NZ) - I'm sure you will find something in the Courtenay Place/Blair St/Allen St precinct.
Just let me know if you need any more recommendations.
Enjoy your stay.
Jo.

Thank you all so much for your help. We leave in 2 days, and I'm looking forward to getting away from all this snow and freezing cold. We'll be sure to try one of the recommendations, and I appreciate knowing about Paradiso.

A. Benson
