Port Douglas

We are planning to visit Port Douglas in Aug with 2 toddlers. We would like to know if there is a supermarket along Macrossan Street where we can buy food to cook for the kids. Any recommendations on apartments with wading pools?

Also, besides visiting the reefs and rainforest, what other activities are there for toddlers?

Is it advisable to rent a car from Cairns airport and drive to Port Douglas? We have about 7 adults and 2 toddlers.

Thank you so much.

Hi Jackie, there is a supermarket right in the center of things on Macrossan. I believe it is called "Coles" but my memory may be failing me.

A lot of the apartments can arrange pickup from the airport for a reasonable fee. If you're staying in Port Douglas, you really don't need a car. Most of the tours have free pick up at the hotels in town.

Others will probably pipe in to help you with your other questions.

Hi Jackie-
Mina is right about the supermarket in the center of town called Coles. They will have everything you need. Now, as far as the car versus a shuttle from the airport, the problem you're going to run into is that because there are so many of you (seven adults and two toddlers), you will have to get two shuttles to Port Douglas and many of the tours to the Rainforest and Tablelands are limited to groups of 6 and under. So, if I were you, I'd rent the car. Besides the driving around that area is beautiful and you can do things at your own pace which might be really important with the little ones along. My husband and I rented a car and I was really glad we did. It gave us a lot of freedom to see things we wouldn't have seen otherwise. Well, have fun! Queensland is spectacular!

Hi Jackie,
there was a piece last week on a TV travel show called Getaway (they have a website) about the Rainforest Habitat just near Port Douglas. It looked great and you can have 'Breakfast with the Birds' which you all might enjoy.
There is also a great fish'n'chip shop in Macrossan St where you can get takeaway and go back to your apartment and enjoy!
Cairns is not far away from PD, by bus or car, and has lots of shops, restaurants, cinemas, nice walks along the esplanade, casino etc.

There is also another mini grocery store on Davidson- the IGE. On the eastern side of town if you happen to be closer to the pacific ocean side. The IGE and Coles also sell those rotisserie chickens and other hot foods like they do here in the US so you don't have to cook. Coles has a much bigger selection and has salads and vegeterian items.
With 7 adults it may be more economical for renting a van or taking two taxis than to take the shuttle bus since they charge by the person. two lane highway type roads. If you are used to driving on the other side of the road then go for it. I wasn't and glad that I didn't - I don't think I could have hanled the traffic circles well. But if the road is not too crowded which is most of the time then it should be no problem at all.

For the toddlers hand feed the kangoroos, wallabees and Imu at the wildlife encounter just as you enter port douglass - it's $2.00 AUS for a bag of rabbit food type pellets. (there is also a big IGA supermarket across the street) The breakfast with the birds is fun but be prepared to be dived bombed by some bird waste although it's rare.

The wild life encounter that Oztravel is talking about is the Rainforest Habitat that Kay mentioned. We did the breakfast with the birds and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The food was great and the birds were spectacular. Also, there are other sections of the habitat where you can see kangaroos, wallabies, crocs, etc. It was great fun and your toddlers will love it. As far as appartments, we stayed at the Boathouse which was very nice. The pool was under construction while we were there but it didn't look very deep or very big so you could easily keep and eye on the little ones. I think if you do a search under Port Douglas Accomodations on your search engine, you'll find lots of appartments. Have fun!

I agree about the Rainforest Habitat. We rented bikes and rode there from our hotel. The grocery is right in the heart of town. Cairns is very skippable, compared to the sleepy town of Port Douglas, which is small and friendly. We shuttled from the airport in a bus that could've held many more than in your party. We even reserved a spot ahead of time via the internet. A bit too far to drive back and forth just to see a movie in Cairns.
