New Zealand - National Parks - costs to visit/passes

Do national park areas in New Zealand have costs involved in going in to see them? If so, is it possible to pre purchase (from Australia, via web) a pass that will get us into various national parks in the North Island, and we won't have to pay any more at the gate.
(The reason I ask is that National Parks in Aust. cost money to visit, as we found out on a holidays to Tasmania, when a pass would have been a good investment to have before travel). Or, have you just paid as you go, and what have been the approx costs involved in doing this? We will be 2 adults travelling in a car. Thanks.

There is currently no charge to access NZ National Parks.

There is a charge for the use of huts on multi-day hikes, which is the primary reason for the track booking system on the most popular tracks (Milford, etc).

Details on NZ parks/tracks found here:

http://www.doc.govt.nz/

FYI - NZ GST increased from 12.5% to 15% in October of this year.

FREE to walk, lodgings and huts have fees.

Enjoy it, everything else in NZ is $$!
