Need advise on Heron Island

My wife and I are going to Australia in Dec. we are planning to spend 4 nights at silky oaks then 2 nights in cairns so we can whitewater raft. my travel agent then booked us for 4 nights at Heron Island. I am worried that we are going to be bored. we are taking the helicopter over. are we better off going to another island. the pictures of heron look amazing.

thanks for any suggestions and guidance.

I must say there's not much to do in Heron Island but that's because it's isolated...it's also why it's beautiful!
You can snorkle, scuba dive and take reef tours.
One thing that is quite amazing during that time is the green turlte nesting season. Their eggs must even be hatching in December so it's quite amazing to see hundreds of hatchlings trying to make it to sea. Unless other islands have more night life and other things to offer, it's a great travel experience.
Glad to share some photos..will include in next email.

I have heard (I don't have any to compare it with!)that it is the best place to scuba dive since it's on the Great Barrier Reef. If you don't have a diving license, you can get trained in a 4 hr training course...quite convenient! OR you can just snorkle and do the walking reef tours...

Heron does not come within a country mile of Lizard and if you are paying for a helicopter to get there you could well spend that better on one of the more northern islands. Heron is on the Barrier reef but the very, very bottom end of the Barrier reef and very isolated from everywhere else - that means that there are not regular and cheap airfares to get to Gladstone ( the "forgetable" town where you hop from to get to Heron . Heron is also very small with not much to do other than scuba or snorkle and listen to the sometimes very noisy birds which lend their name to the island.
Anyway this is only my opinion but if you had cheaper fares to and from Cairns ( don't stay in Cairns ) and skip Heron you may be able to aford the "well worth it" other islands.

I'm afraid Janese is quite right...I heard a lot of good things about Lizard Island but decided not to go there since it was A LOT more expensive than Heron.
However, if you are the type who enjoys nature, this is the place for you. Although it gets a bit smelly and loud (because of the birds) it is the one character of the island that you will always remember.

Have a wonderful trip!
