Yes, that's the ball game. An unfortunate way for the Test series to end for Joe Root but no point in such a talented young bloke putting himself at further risk - and also a good common sense example to other young players who may be tempted to overdo it.

Btw regarding the boredom of the series - for some - if the fielding of both sides had been better - remember that Australia put more than a few down (Cook twice in his epic Melbourne innings) and had the England fielders been in position to pick up a few more of those lucky rather than judicious Australian snicks through the slips - a number of those team innings totals would have been a lot lower. And if it's any consolation, I managed to 'watch' most of the series via the internet commentary rather than on live to air TV with its serial ad breaks and its playing up to the show-offs in the crowd (making an exception of course for those accidental shots of selected sun dresses and short shorts - on women at least).

Oh well I was absolutely wrong about this side not having a hope of winning the ashes. I didn’t enjoy this series as much as usual as it seemed to have a nasty undercurrent.
annhig thanks a lot for starting this post. I have enjoyed everybody’s comments and the comments were always polite and informative.
Now the ODI’s will get my heart rate up a bit.

Thanks, farrermog - that just about sums it up, really, though we could hardly claim to have deserved being let off the 4-0 hook.

And of course things might have been different if some of those snicks had gone to hand but OTOH had the Aussies taken all their catches our ignominy would have been even more complete.

I agree it was a good idea for Rooty to bow to the inevitable - no-one doubts his bravery or determination, and I hope he'll recover in time for the pyjama games when he can just concentrate on batting.

Cheska - i'm sure you're happy to have been proved wrong - I would be in those circumstances. Unfortunately I predicted the same thing about our team and I was proved right. Did you hear that a message was read out to the crowd on the last day threatening them with expulsion and heavy fines if they were absusive or otherwise unruly? The joke was that they got David Warner to read it out! I have heard the Chappell bros were responsible for introducing sledging into cricket, but I don't know if it's true, certainly some Aussies [and a few brits I accept] appear to have developed it to a fine art. Paul Collingwood told a story about being sledged unmercifully in the tour after he and the other England Ashes 2005 heroes received their MBEs, [which Shane Warne has admitted] which only finished when he scored over 200 in the Adelaide test.

And here's a little quiz to entertain you while we're waiting for the hostilities to recommence in a few days time:

Northie - did you ever decide between going to the ODI or 20/20?

Thanks, annhig - this has been a good thread. I even checked in occasionally during my charging about that end of the world.

Now - is it worth thinking about a trip to England for the next series?

margo - I'm glad that you and others have enjoyed it, but of course the fun hasn't ended yet - we have the ODIs and 20/20s to come.

as for a trip to the UK for the next series - of course, it's a great idea. I can't find the dates yet, but the matches will be at Headingly, Edgbaston, Old Trafford, Lords and the Oval. All good places to be based for touring as well as watching the cricket.

Hey, Northie, do you think we're actually going to win a match???

As I posted on the WFD thread, why on earth did we not play the ODIs before the tests? Roy is playing the Aussie quicks brilliantly and he would have been nailed on for a test chance. He certainly could not have done any worse than the openers we did use. What a fab knock.
