Kuranda Railway
Will be taking the train in the morning...is there a preference as to sitting on the right or left side for the view? Previous poster mentioned the fumes from the engine but haven't seen anything discussing scenery.
The return trip is the Skyrail..sounds awesome.
Thanks

As I recall, going up, the best views should be from the right side, facing forward. There are a few switchbacks, so either side will get some good views.

When you return on the SkyRail, I would suggest allowing enough time to get off and take a little walk at each of the two mid-stations. Sometimes there are guided walks that leave from those stations at specific times.

Hi Marilyn-
We took the skyrail up and the train down, as we heard the sun would be better for viewing from the skyrail in in the morning. Actually, we wished we had taken the skyrail both ways, which you can do for the same price...
We found the train crowded, noisy and unless you get right next to the window, not all that scenic. To quote my daughter.."boooring".
That said, if you really like long train rides, the north (on the right going up)side of the train had the better views.
Definitely don't miss the way stations on the skyrail. They have some awesome rangers who take you on free nature walks, and at one is a little museum display. You can also go on walks out to scenic spots.

If you take the Skyrail one way only, take it going down to Cairns - and face the way you are going, for the view once you clear the canopy is stunning.

Do stop at the two small Skyrail stops on the way, they offer information and views.

The train is an icon tourist 'thing', but next time we'll take Skyrail both ways.

Hope this helps,
Scott

We did the train up (on the right side) and the cable car down...best thing was watching the (exhausted) Japanese tour group have a sleep in the train on the way up!
NB - we were a bit disappointed in Kuranda, thought it was a bit touristy, but realised afterwards that the bit we thought was the arts market wasn't and that we'd missed it completely! You have to walk further than you think - don't stop at the first bit!
