Kakadu Touring - Jim Jim and Twin Falls or Ubirr Rock Art?

My wife and I are traveling with our kids (four active teenagers with a love for the outdoors) in the Northern Territory with a few days in Kakadu and I am faced with a choice in Kakadu. Because of timing and our itinerary, I am trying to decide between a day on a 4WD guided tour to Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls or a self-tour of the rock art at Ubirr and the Guluyambi River cruise. We will have spent the previous day exploring some of the southern sections of the park including Nourlangie Rock and some of the smaller falls in the southern part of the park.

Does anyone have any insight into the Jim Jim/Twin Falls guided tours or sone thoughts on the choice. Thank in advance for your help.

Hi CHC - I have a feeling that when we were at Kakadu Jim Jim Falls was closed due to crocodile activity

However, the view from the top of Ubirr rock is pretty amazing - we spent ages up there - the view of the escarpment and the wetlands etc is fantastic. So I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ubirr as an option.

I would totally agree with stormbird. Ubirr is awesome for the view and easily-accessed art. In some ways I found the art at Nourlangie to be more stunning, and the view from the top is worth the climb, too. DH and I stayed in Kakadu in mid-July last year - great weather, lots to do and not enough time to do it in. Cannot comment on JimJim Falls as we didn't go there.

Enjoy Kakadu.

Very tough choice! We were fortunate enough to have done both sights on out trip to Kakadu in August 2000. Ubirr at sunset was awe-inspiring and the Guluyami cruise was well run and interesting. On the other hand, Jim Jim and Twin Falls were remote and very impressive, though I imagine during the Wet Season, they would have been even more so. We kayaked up to the base of Twin Falls, which was really cool. It was a long day, however. But I suppose, if I could relive one moment, in Kakadu, it would be Ubirr. Our boys were teenagers then...they still talk about how wonderful our Kakadu trip was.

To stormbird, dottyp and RalphR...you have me sold on the Ubirr choice...thank you very much. Interestingly, I ran all of this by my kids with pictures of some of the amazing rock art and they were unanimous in their choice to explore Ubirr and along with the Guluyambi cruise. I can't wait. Thank you.

Good choice but a shame you had to choose.
