Holiday Inn at The Rocks

We are booked to stay at the Holiday Inn at The Rocks in Sydney in January. Does anyone have any comments about the hotel and/or suggestions for other hotels in that convenient area? Many thanks

We are staying at the Rendezvous Stafford which is on Harrington St. in The Rocks. We arrive next Wednesday for 5 nights. Have never been here before but it was recommended by several people and by our travel planner. Will try to give you some feedback after our stay.

We stayed there last year and were very pleased with the great location and the friendly service from hotel staff. A good example of this is what happened on the day of our arrival. Because we were members of Holiday Inn's Priority Club <http://tinyurl.com/e6ruz>, we were invited to a (free) cocktail reception hosted by the hotel manager. For over an hour, we were able to talk with her about Sydney and Australia, in general, and get her recommendations on where to go (and not go) and what to see. She later typed out a list of her personal restaurant recommendations for other Australian cities on our itinerary. This type of personal attention was not what we expected from a large international chain, but was noted and very much appreciated. Of course, we'll stay there again on future trips back to Sydney!

i have stayed both there and rendezvous stafford. i preferd the size of the rendezvous rooms and the imtimate feel of that property, but the views from the roof and even my room at holiday inn were unbeatable in that range.
the room was drab. it's a weighing of what's important to you. the location of holiday inn is not actually better than stafford, as you have to loop the horseshoe to get to and fro the ferries.

it is a toss up.

I live near the Rocks and can attest that the Holiday Inn at the Rocks is in a superb location. However I cannot comment on the standards of its rooms.

The Rocks area has a lot of charm given its historical significance. It is an area with original restored buildings.

Another hotel in the area with harbour views is the Sebal Pier One. This is probably a bit more upmarket than the Holiday Inn. Not sure of its tariff.

An alternative is the Marriott near Circular Quay (Pitt Street), also well located.

Further details of the above hotels can be found at,

Enjoy!

Hi Pennez,

Your timing is perfect -- I've just gotton feedback from clients of mine that I put in there a few weeks ago -- apparently there's some sort of "dragging main" thing going on Saturday nights with teenagers (?) 20-something's, I don't know, but anyway, they drive up and down George St., yelling, revving their engines, throwing bottles, etc. and just generally making alot of noise - so, do not get a room facing George St.!

indeed that is a well known sydney phenonemon - lapping the main is what we used to call it. lots of young people in their hotted up cars, cruising up and down george st. if you're staying in the area, it's worth a sit on a bench (try the bus stop near circular quay on george st) and watch for a while. check out the numberplates, it's a very entertaining, if a little mind boggling. it's definitely not restricted to sydney - I know this is/was common in country towns (and newcastle's hunter st) as well.

Lance,

what IS the deal with that? I mean, not the "lapping", or dragging main, or whatever we want to call it; as it goes on in lots of places in the US as well;

but, my client said the cars were of the BMW, Mercedes variety, and he even saw a Ferrari as well. Further, when he complained to the desk he was told that the police wouldn't come out; the Desk Clerk told him that when it first started the police confiscated a couple of cars and hauled in some kids, but afterward there were editorials about the police "profiling"....???

When my client asked about the broken bottles, and couldn't they be arrested for drinking and driving he was told that it was only the passengers who were doing that!

I might just take your advice and check out the "show" when I'm there!

Are these the (in)famous "hoons"?

In the US we have open container laws, so you're in violation if there's an opened container of alcohol anywhere in the vehicle, even if the driver hasn't been near it. And throwing a bottle, well, that's bizarre that's it not controlled.

this is an ongoing issue in several areas of sydney.

The residents of the redeveloped wharf area of the western side of the bridge in the rocks have forced traffic flow changes in that area to inhibit this behaviour.Tragically two youg men of middle eastern appearance were shot there a year or so ago (one died)

Cultural sensitivity issues mean police tread lightly. It is sometimes related to gang activities and drug dealing.
