Lizzy,

We'll be at the canyon at pretty much the same time (April 26-30). We start our hike an the 28th. I hope there's good weather for both of us! Last year, we were in the southern Utah parks during the first week of May, and it both poured rain (flash floods!) and then proceeded to snow. Better not do that again this year!

And yes, if you hear the helicopter going into the canyon for a rescue--that'll probably be us! Don't think I haven't worried about that.

hi lizzy f... i live in a valley 1000mts high in the caribbean, just about like the weather you will experience in your up coming mexico cruise, so i have 3 questions for you or any of you mates:
1) HJAH.- i will be arriving in hobart by mid april and was also staying a the henry jones for a couple of nights, so... i don't mind cool rooms, i like them to sleep in. do you think that traveling single, will it be worth it spacewise, to change my reservation to an apartment in somerset for a couple of days?
2)OZ autumn weather for packing.- tassie is my first stop in OZ then on to melbourne, adelaide, barossa, finaly sydney and then uluru before returning to USA. talking about C° and packing i guess that by staying pretty much south during april- mid may in OZ the weather will be autumn-like except uluru?
3) what is a whinging POM attitude? just curious ;>
thanks... jj

lavici, a whinging Pom refers to someone from England who does not like anything they find anywhere else in the World and everything is better back in England - my mother-in-law was the best of the best, whinging pom, actually. We have a love/hate relationship with the English ( except there was no love involved with my mother-in-law who I think no one loved, not even her sons and daughter ).
I really think that you would get much more from your visit by staying at somewhere smaller and more intimate than the HJAH or Somerset if you are by yourself and I would be looking at somewhere in Battery Point or Sandy Bay at a B&B because talking to locals will give you far better help and information about a place than the reception staff of a hotel. In fact I hope you are not thinking of staying in Hobart all of the time - there are some absolutely lovely accommodation places outside of Hobart and any other little cities/towns

Sorry Lavici I forgot to answer your other question about clothes. Who can tell what the temps will be in all of the places you are going to because we have had the most unusual summer I can remember. Think in terms of autumn temps for just about everywhere and that means that it can vary by quite a lot. Last week we had a very hot day - over 30deg C and yesterday was 14deg Celcius.

hi lizzy...many thanks. oh!! and it sounds so cute but i see hmmm "a whinging POM" is a narrow minded arrogant person? then is what we also consider spaniards ( we also have a love/hate relationship with them too)in general, it's the same'olsame 'ol you know, for the same colonialistic reasons i guess.
but, the hate is on their part, they look ( literally from europe)down at us in S.America like we're still indians hanging from the trees, when most of their palaces were built with s. american and mexican gold... but, anyway i got it. it's very rude when people from other countries tell you in the face that everything in their own country is better...ok, then stay there!! ja ja ja
as to hobart, i think you are right, i will check out battery point etc. my basic and most frustrating problem yet is driving alone 'aussie style' around the island, so i'll need to take a tour or a bus... i guess, i was taking 'the freycinet walk' next april 11th but i still don't know if my visa will arrive in time ( i had to send my passport to chile, imagine... 9 hours away !!) so, if i can't make it in time, i still wanted to visit freycinet and cradle mountain's dove walk with the "pure tasmania" people or...do you think i can be flexible and arrange something when i get there at the tourism office, it will be mid april and several foodie tours are closed and there's no lavender harvest, but i'm sure i can find something to do without me distractedly driving into someone on " my side" of the road, god forbid! climate is crazy so as to the clothes, then i'll layer. muchas gracias and have a wonderful time in méxico... jjj
