Logos999, there's a great trip report on Adelaide by JohnFitz you might find helpful, click on his name above. He found Glenelg rather underwhelming, as did I when i was there.
Early February is just outside high season, SA schools go back on 27 January, so you might be able to get something relatively cheap. Usually most beachside holidays lets skyrocket in price over the summer period.

So logos999 I am assuming that you are by yourself , will be working during the day and want to spend time at the beach just enjoying it , swimming , exercising etc ?
I cannot comment definitively but I think it maybe hard to get what you want at that price .But school holidays should have finished . Best to look on wotif .com as a starting point to see what things rent for a night or week .Most hotels etc will negotiate an attractive price if you are talking of 5 weeks .
Think about a combination perhaps of some time at Glenelg or further afield .Are you driving ? Can you bear staying in town during the week but doing things on the weekend at other destinations ? The beaches further along the coast about 40 minutes or so from the city are wonderful . There are excellent apartment options in the city or North Adelaide .

Well, I don't (usually) have a car, so there may be a problem? Should I prefer (North) Adelaide over Glenelg? What is important is good access to public transport (and beaches). 500 a week is the upper limit.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Are you really going to spend 5 weeks at the beach? Have you been to Australia or Adelaide before? From memory you are from Munich?
As others have said, there is a tram from the city centre to Glenelg which takes about 20 minutes or so.
Our public transport is not the greatest and some places of interest (ie Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Victor Harbor) would require either a car or bus tour to get there.

Below is the official SA tourism website for more info.

If you are here into March, we have a lot of things on. Are you interested in theatre (Adelaide Festival of Arts), comedy (Fringe Festival) or car racing (Clipsal 500)? All these happen in March. The Tour Downunder pro-cycling is in late January.
