cairns hotel advice

Hi all,

I have an early flight out of Cairns (6am) and have decided to spend the previous night at a hotel convenient to the airport (I will be coming in from PD). Any advice for a basic, clean and close spot? I just need one room, would love to have a pool but not necessary. Around $100 would be nice too

Cairns city is already close to the airport, about 10 minutes max. Suggest you have a look on www.wotif.com - there's some bargains there right now.

I meant to add that wotif is showing Shangri-la at $99 a night for some nights - this is a huge reduction and the hotel is in a top position on waterfront in city. It has a pool but so does just about everywhere.

We stayed at Lilybank B&B which is reasonably close to the airport when we arrived in the early hours from Japan and loved it. In fact it was so nice we booked up a couple of extra days before we flew out to NZ. Very comfortable rooms and amazing breakfasts.

Incidentally,Pat woolford is being very modest as, along with Mike, she runs the place!!

Sprung ... crellston, glad you enjoyed your stay and so nice to see you both. Not every day we have people from Potter's Bar, where as you know I lived briefly.

Sadly, our True Blue Aussie airline, Qantas, has just announced the axing of 14 flights a week from Narita, Japan, and another 8 from Jetstar from Osaka and Nagoya. As from December. A devastating impact on the area, not just for Cairns but also Port Douglas and anywhere in FNQ relying on flights into Cairns airport, whether coming directly from Japan or the many who come from Europe and UK via Asia, such as yourselves.

Hopefully another airline or two will fill the gap, but in the meantime there's going to be some huge accommodation bargains in the area, so folks, make the most of them before the poor operator goes broke.

The airport is very convenient for town, also having had early morning flight no problems at all arranging a taxi to the airport, worked fine.
Although I have never stayed ( as did not know ) about Pat's place sounds a good option.

I too read about those flight reductions. I also saw that Tiger wants to set up international services ( different from theirt Tiger Singapore flights ) but apparently regulations mean at the moment they cannot.
If routes are being pulled I think they should at least freely open those routes to other airlines who 'want' to fly them.
I remember years ago Singapore Airlines flying 3 or 4 times a week into Cairns, pity they left, let's hope they may think of returning or at least Tiger or or Asia X ( Gold Coast now and from November Perth ) may fill the gap.

Hi Pat, Sorry to learn of the flight reductions into Cairns but not entirely surprised as our flight from Narita was only one third full and with oil at $140 a barrel the airlines must be losing money on a lot of these flights. this must be really tough on those in the tourism industry in the area. Hopefully, other airlines, if allowed by the regulators, will be a little more far-sighted than Quantas and replace these flights. So much for an "open skies" policy! Maybe someone should have a word with Sir Richard?

Looking for accommodation for a family of five for the night of July 16 close to Cairns airport. Any suggestions? Lilybank sounds nice.
