Brisbane Hotels
Hi, I'm looking for a recommendation for a nice boutique-style hotel in Brisbane - I don't mind if it's quite pricey, but I really want somewhere with some character. If there's nowhere like that, which of the large hotels would you recommend
Thanks

Hi Vicki,

On our trip to Brisbane a few years back we stayed at the Sheraton Hotel. We found the hotel very good at that time in all areas and it was quite centrally located and we were able to walk to many of the places we wanted to explore. You might want to check it out.

I havn't been to Lone Pine for about 100 years and it was somewhat ho hum then. If you do go take the ferry that leaves from the wharf down town to Lone Pine and at least have a nice ride. But for my money I would either go to Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast or down to the Gold Coast and to Currumbin Bird sanctuary - in each of these places you will get better value for money.
I would recommend a hotel but for the life of me I cannot think of its name - any Brissy folks on this board, what is the name of the hotel that was once either the old customs house or the Harbour Master's house down near the old Botanical Gardens?

Hello Vicki,

I stayed at the hotel Liz is suggesting - Stamford Plaza - just this last Sunday night, 18th August.

It has a very attractive setting. All the rooms look over the river and are nicely furnished. The modern hotel is tucked behind the old Port Office buildings. These heritage buildings are 'classical tropical colonial' in style.

You can dine or breakfast out on the terrace which is facing the Brisbane river and separated only by the board walk. The publicly accessible boardwalk leads around the river front. As Liz says the Botanical Gardens are right nearby. The Hotel is in what's left of the Brisbane's older areas but still only minutes from the downtown shops. You can hire bikes from the hotel to explore the Gardens and river front.

We grabbed a package off the net - try www.wotif.com or www.stamford.com.au for a look at the place.

For AUD$212 for two persons this included Sunday night accomodation, valet parking, buffet dinner in the Brasserie, buffet breakfast there as well - oh- and sparkling wine in the room.

You could go really upscale and dine at Siggi's in the old Port Office if you liked.

The Sheraton looks pretty tired to me. The Hilton is right in the middle of town surrounded by typical city stuff. The Marriot is sort of near but not right on the river.

Perhaps Stamford is not a boutique hotel but it's not huge either.

Hope this helps...

Go to www.travelmate.com.au
There are some good listings there. The area just north of the transit centre at Roma St.is up a very steep hill and after a days sightseeing can be exhausting hauling yourself back to your hotel if in that area. I would recommend the area near Southbank and the museum and art gallery, close to the train station and walking distance to the city centre.
