It should largely depend on your interest. Do you prefer cities, to see historical sites, etc. I haven't been to many Asian countries but I'd recommend Beijing for the Great Wall & the Forbidden City. Amazing history, culture, and food

While camping in Darwin, we met a couple from the UK who purchased a world ticket that allowed them to travel from UK to Thailand, Oz and some other sites. I believe the world ticket allows you a certain number of kilometers or certain number of stops and you get to pick your destinations. The trip must be completed within 1yr.

Sorry for digressing but you can also try posting on the Asia forum. Happy travels.

It mainly depends on which airline you will be travelling.
If I recall correctly the best timing ( leaving and arriving) going Qantas through Bangkok used to be the best because a lot of the travel was in daylight i.e. you left Australia at 11AM and arrived in Bangkok at a reasonable hour - things may have changed though.
Although Bangkok has become very polluted for my money it still is the most interesting stop-over in Asia mainly because of the such diverse culture there.
If, on the other hand, you were flying Malaysian Airlines they have some terrific packages with stopovers in places like Lan Kawi and they give you a free flight from KL for that. There is lots to do and see in and around KL for instance which you may enjoy.

Didn't mean to click reply then -
Another option is Emerates Airlines. They of course have a stopover in Dubai, which I have not been to but my son, who has a dreadful dislike of travel, raved about when he was there recently - also raved about the airline itself too. Apparently the shopping is terrific - he bought gold and portable DVD's amongst other things.
Anyway there are some ideas for you.
