gladgourd, I agree you asked a civil question and deserve a civil answer. So .... the info given by the Australian Bureau of Statistics may explain the Frommers report. In summary, Tasmania's per-capita fatality rate in 2001 (12.9 per 100,000) rose over 2000 and was 45% above the national average; however, we're talking about a small statistical base and the raw number has stayed fairly consistent at about one person per week. This doesn't amount to mass carnage and is not greatly out of whack with the rest of the country. The Northern Territory had the highest death rate (25/100,000) and the Australian Capital Territory the lowest (5/100,000). In short, I can't see anything to worry about - just apply the normal road sense you'd employ when driving in rural areas in the United States. Enjoy your visit.

BTW, I searched on:
"road accidents" +australia
using the free-download Copernic metasearch engine. Full data can be found under www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats

NeilOz,
That makes perfect sense! Thanks for checking this out. What I found so interesting is that Frommer's made that statement about "don't drive - highest traffic accidents in Australia" and then went on to point out some places that are not to be missed...and you need to drive there!
I have heard that Tasmania is gorgeous and very restful. We are so happy that we can include it in our trip.
Thanks for the civil answer!

Do a little detour to the Village of Richmond en route to Freycinet for a stop in at the best bakers shop in Australia and possibly check out the convict gaol (jail) and on the way back take the route through the village of Ross which is not out of your way much at all. Both places are worth seeing. As far as the countryside goes it will probably be dry and not as lush as it sometimes is.

Thanks, LizF,
I'll check out Richmond. Is there a particular bakery you recommend? Ross sounds interesting too.

Check this out for Richmond

The bakery is just close to the area where you go to see the jail. I am running late at present or I would have found you some more about Ross etc.
Will try later
Liz
