Auckland Accomodation
Hello all. My husband and I are a late twenties couple who will be visiting NZ for 4 weeks in Jan-Feb. We will be in Auckland for 2 wkd nts in Jan. Would love to stay at the Crowne Plaza but it is booked so I am looking for a nice mid range hotel (~130-250NZ/nt) within walking distance (no more than 1 mile) to the local nightlife/pubs. We were looking at the Sebel Suites but I fear that we may need something more central. Any recommendations would be appreciated

We stayed at Quay West Suites which is central to everything. The suites are usually cheaper on the weekends.
Check out http://www.wotif.com/Hotel.jsp?hotel=312. These are prices for the next 2 weeks, but sometimes you can get the same in advance if you email directly.
Whatever you do, it would be helpful to all if you would return to this post afterwards and tell us what your experience was. Thanks.

We also stayed at Sebel. After the overseas flight they gave us our room at 9 AM, pointed us towards breakfast, and everything else we needed. Lovely suite (the standard one) with a washer dryer(!) and a huge shower. Recommended. Very centrally located.

Hi,
I found that the Sebel Suites had fantastic rates on the weekends. Then I read elsewhere to find out why. (www.tripadvisor.com)
It seems the area around the hotel parties until the wee hours of the morning on weekends. One comment said it was so noisy all night long that sleep started at 5AM both nights. Being in your 20s, you may be partying with the crowd, so it won't matter. In fact, the bars/nightclubs will be at your door step. I just thought you might want to hear about this. Sebel has fantastic reviews, otherwise.
I decided on the Langham Hotel (former Sheraton), while location is not on the waterfront, it's near Queen Sreet. For Oct, when I'm going, I found very good weekend packages with breakfast, champagne, etc. I am not sure about January. It seems like a pretty posh place too, with rates from around NZD160 (no package) and they have a shuttle down Queen street to the waterfront.
Hope you have a good trip.

We moved out of the Sebel because of the parties and rugby crowds right below us. We moved to the Great Ponsonby B&B in Ponsonby just for the night but cancelled at the Sebel and stayed on for a few days. Very cental, a cab ride into town is about $12NZ and it is walkable to K Rd night spots . Also within walking distance of what seemed like hundreds of restaurants and bars.

I'm a newbie here, but have been lurking for a year. I was in New Zealand last November and found this board to be incredibly helpful.
I stayed at the Sebel last year my first night in Auckland. I found it to be delightful. However, my suite was on the opposite of the harbor, across from a parking garage. We had no problem with "nightlife" noise. It was also a Sunday.
I think you'll enjoy your stay there.
Sorry for the late reply, looks like everyone took care of you. Have a great trip!

Thanks eveyone for the feedback. Fortunately my husband and I are sound sleepers so I doubt the noise will be a problem. Also as suggested in another post, we will probably be out late with the crowds anyway. Thanks again for all your advice.
