We are traveling to NZ in March with another family- 5 children ;10 and 12 yr olds and one 5 yr old. Has anyone stayed at the Grasmere Lodge or Wilderness Lodge- the latter looks more kid friendly? They both look fabulous.

We've stayed at the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge - is this the Wilderness Lodge you're refering to?

There are two Wilderness Lodges, one at Lake Moeraki, the other at Arthur's Pass. We really enjoyed the one at Arthur's Pass, more than the one at Lake Moeraki. It's a FANTASTIC place for kids: ship herding, shearing, walks. Don't miss it!

I need some info. We are thinking of driving (automatic medium car, 4 people) from Christchurch to Greymouth via Arthur's Pass next March. I have read a lot of the posts here, and there is a mention that the road from the pass down to Greymouth is steep and twisting.

Is it dangerous or scary? Are there railings or borders, or is there nothing at the edge? When you go down to the west, are you on the inside or outside most of the time? If you could describe the road and driving, I would appreciate it.

Jed, we drove in the other direction a couple of years ago and I felt neither endangered nor remotely scared. Somebody closer to the action might like to comment, but I'm sure there was nothing exceptional about the road, which was in good condition and well fenced.

The road to Greymouth is fine. It has been straightened in several places. We even take our jet boat over it.

We drove to Greymouth from Christchurch last April using Arthur's pass. I am from Florida, and this was my second day driving on the left hand side of the road. We had no problems and never ever felt any concerns about the road or road conditions. In fact the only thing I remember is just how fantastic this scenic drive was for us

For anyone who has stayed at Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass - We are considering staying there one night. It seems very expensive - ~$440./night on the hotel site.

Is there some way to get a lower rate? I am unable to find it. Is it worth one night?

Are there other good hotels at Arthur's Pass? How about Chalet Lodge?
