What are your favorite places/cities in China

Hello everyone,
For all you seasoned travellers to China, please tell me which places or cities you enjoyed the most in China. Which places/cities really fascinated or captured you the most? A lot of you may say Beijing since it seems to offer so much.
What about other places beside Beijing. I would love to hear everyone opinions.
Thanks.

I think I enjoyed Xian and Guilin the most. All of the history in and around Xian was amazing. The Terracotta Warriors and so much more. They are known for their dumplings, which I sometimes dream about. Delicious. Also enjoyed the show there to do with the Tang Dynasty (my favorite Dynasty). Guilin and the river cruise was breathtaking. $7.00 hour long massages to die for. Having only been to one cave before I was impressed with the Reed Flute Cave. We also went to visit some farm homes and see their lifestyles, animals and meet their families. I felt honored. We rode there in a motorcycle side car from the departure point of the river cruise. Wild and exciting! I really enjoyed the Yangtze cruise too. 100's of waterfalls and beautiful scenery.

we agree with connette...really loved Guilin and Xian. In both places we had a private guide for some of the time and off on our own at other times. We loved the soft sweetness of Guilin.... (on our own) and the soldiers in Xian made me cry. Xian is polluted and busy...and wonderful.

We especially liked Guilin and a day spent boating on the nearby Li River. All details can easily be arranged at your hotel once you get there.

I very much like Yunnan. There are wonderful places, Lijiang (although now many tourists go here) I think is wonderful. Kunming is also very nice, as well as Xingshubanna (Jinghong) which is very interesting. There are many different ethnic minoroties in these areas & the landscape and climate is varied.
