Travel Insurance Recommendations?

Does anyone have any suggestions for travel insurance when travelling to China? We have used Travel Guard before domestically and for cruises and liked them.

Insurance has more to do with the underwriter and the particular product than the destination. If you like Travel Guard, use them.

Travel Guard is fine. I have often used them but recently switched to Travel Insured largely because the price was better.

Two other reasons I swtiched to Travel Insured. One is it considers your traveling companion someone who follows the same itinerary even if you do not share a room. In most other policies you must share a room. Also, they will give you a certain amount of instant money to pay medical bills. Since some hospitals and doctors in foreign countries require a deposit before they see you I thought this was important.

One thing about policies -- be sure to read all the small print and all the definitions.

A good resource is www.insuremytrip.com which lets you compare companies and types of policies. Travel Guard is one of the companies. Do compare policy terms for financial default, pre-existing condition, travel companion, etc. as they do vary.

And it's wise to buy only what you need. Many of the prepackaged policies include insurance for everything - lost baggage insurance, medical insurance, trip canccellation insurance, etc. Decide what you need and shop for that. After doing some research for myself, I concluded that the only insurance I really needed was medical evacuation insurance. (obviously, everyone is different. I have medical insurance that provides world-wide coverage) While medical evacuation can be VERY expensive ($75,000-$100,000), the insurance alone is very reasonable because it's such an infrequent event. I found a place that will insure me for a year at a time for something like $47 a year. What a deal!

Travel Guard. I got home from Ghana last month and flew from Ghana-Italy-Atlanta-L.A. and picked up my luggage in Atlanta to clear customs and then recheck it for the L.A. portion. Well, Delta lost my luggage between Atlanta and L.A...a BIG mess of a situation. I called Travel Guard around the end of the first week of the lost luggage and they were very nice on the phone and sent out a lost luggage claim form immediately. Well, my luggage showed up about two weeks later so I didn't send in the claim, but they were very professional and helpful.I've been buying their insurance for years. Happy Travels!
