Travel insurance question

In the past, my health insurance covered Medical evacuation and medical needs abroad, however, I've learned today that this is no longer the case. We leave to Japan in approximately 6 weeks and need to find coverage.

Any recommendations for a good trip insurance policy covering travel medical needs and med evac?

My TA gets it for us thru Travel Guard.

Also try:

Go to insuremytrip.com which offers many different company's policies. I usually get the one from Arch insurance which covers preexisting conditions. But you have to purchase this policy within 21 days of making your first payment for the trip, in order for preexisting conditions to be covered.

I use Seven Corners. There have been a number of threads on this, some quite recent. Do a search here, and on the Europe and Tips boards.

I've had good luck with TravelGuard, usually the gold or silver plan. Claims were paid quickly without overwhelming paperwork. This one also requires purchase within 15 days of making your first payment (i.e. your air tickets) in order to have pre-existing conditions covered.

Im not sure how other companies work, but with this company, you choose the coverage based on the estimated cost of your trip. You can increase it later if you decide you need more coverage. I always base this on my non-refundable items such as air and prepaid hotels.

In addition to the above we had occasion to use a policy purchased per UAL by Allianz and they were great to deal with. You can just google them nd check out their travel programs.

Thank you all for your responses. I was not so concerned about losing money in travel expenses as I was in medical evacuation and medical insurance. As it turns out, after a second call to my insurance company, I am in fact covered for both. That's a big relief!

That is great! Not many medical insurance plans cover med evac - I'm glad yours does.

Kathie when Sue got hospitalized three yrs. ago in BKK our Allianz policy covered the bill, nearly 6 k 100% but first the hosp. had to show that our primary carrier denied any claim which they initially did. The billing office even showed me the "claim denied" response. Unbeknownst to us the hosp. resubmitted the bill after discharge. Bear in mind Allianz paid so our out of pocket was zero. So about two mos. after we got home a check came from our primary carrier for 90% of the final bill, about 5.3k. .
