I've been to Thailand twice; Bangkok in Nov 1998, and last October/November -Phuket and Krabi Province. So I can tell you what I remember and enjoyed the most:

A) Riding The Chao Phraya River Express Boats in Bangkok. I boarded at Tha Oriental and went upriver. The boarding itself was not for the fainthearted. But I recall that no matter how many stops the ferry made, the lady ticket-takers always came around to ask for your fare payment.

B) Coming in from Don Muang International Aiport after flying from New York via Vancouver and Hong Kong, I hired a limo from one of the car services at the arrivals hall in the airport. All of it worked fine. Prepay at the counter receive a voucher, be escorted out to the car, and off we went. Most of the ride, my heart was in my mouth as the driver and his Mercedes approached speeds over 90 m.p.h and would rush up on a car in front of us, horn blaring before the other drivers would veer out of our way.

C) The Elegant Thai Restaurant on the 5th floor of the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. Not only was the food and service superb, but the ladies working there were simply stunning.

D) On my first EVER open water dive, off the coast of Racha Yai Island, about an hour and half out from Chalong Harbour, Phuket, I found myself the object of a barracudas scrutiny. Fortunately, he went about his business giving me no more than a passing glance, hence I am alive to describe the event.

E) Watching the sunset at Kata Yai, Phuket while dining at the Boathouse Restaurant.

Michael From New York
I love these...My 'memories' as opposed to must seesBR>1>'88, sitting on the back deck of a cronky old steamer boat from Don Suk, near Surat Thani, heading for Koh Samui ( pre-airport days ), the sun was setting, cool breeze, watching the sun go down listening to Fleetwood Mac singing ' Everywhere' !
2>'89, New Year's Eve on the beach at Pattaya, fireworks, music, never seen anything like it in my life !
3>90's..lost, sitting on a beach near Saturn in the far south, small fish washed up on the beach, still wriggling, picked it up, swam-out a few yeards and put it back in the water, it swam off.
(Amazing the things that memories hold-on-to)
4>Getting up early in Sukhotai for the sunrise, kneeling by the roadside with Thai friends offering rice and food to the passing monks, then having the monks say prayers whilst they place their hands above your head, simply amazing
5>On a night train, it breaks-down, stuck with 300 or so others in the middle of no-where, many of us get off the train, music starts, laughter, an impromptu comedy dance...a memory and half.

These are not sights, just things that stick in your mind. Sure, could happen anywhere, but they happened in Thailand. A feat for the senses.
