Tokyo hotel help
Hi, we are travelling to Tokyo in November for 7 nights. We have narrowed the hotel choice down to three!!! The Park Hyatt, the Grand Hyatt or the Conrad (I think!!). We want to be quite central and get around ourselves using the public transport system. Can any one suggest which would be the best place to stay location wise and which is the better hotel.

I would say that the Park Hyatt is the best hotel even though I've never stayed there and Shinjuku is a dynamic neighborhood.
Transport from Shinjuku Station to anywhere in Tokyo is a train ride away. Some of the most beautiful views of Tokyo can be had from the rooms at the Park Hyatt.

We just stayed in the Conrad a couple of months ago. It is a slick place, a bit minimalist in design the way hotels are these days. If you like modern design and dress up atmosphere you'll like the Conrad. View's from the rooms are nice if you look out over Hamarikyu and Tokyo Bay. Location was very good, limo bus right from Narita was easy. The Shiodome area is good for shopping and restaurants, and subway is right there in the building (under).
The only thing about it we didn't like was the atmosphere and service, which I'm finding hard to describe...it was kind of like all of the staff had an air about them that made it seem like they thought they were better than the guests. We've stayed in plenty of fine hotels over the years and not once had a service experience like we had here.
For example, when we got off of the airport limo bus, we went into the ground floor lobby area, and there were staff there who did not greet us (very unusual in Japan). We wandered around looking for reception, and finally asked them where it was (but usually if staff see people wandering looking confused, they immediately offer assistance..this did not happen). Reception is on a higher floor...you take an elevator that is marked with a small sign that we couldn't see because it's hidden by a plant. At no time did anyone offer to help with our bags yet. At the check in counter, a staff member took our bags while we checked in, then handed them back to us once we had our keys...I've never had that happen in a hotel of this level - we've always been escorted to our room and had someone take our bags.
We also asked for a late checkout, and the desk clerk offered us 30 minutes extension, to 12:30, and wouldn't go beyond that. We ended up having lunch in one of the restaurants there (which was good but expensive, but we knew the price going in and chose it for convenience and had heard it was good). The manager (who has since left the Conrad to work at the new Ritz Carlton) got talking with us (he was the one staff member who was very good) and he said he would arrange a late check out for us...and made a call, we were all set with a checkout at 4:00 no problem....why the front desk couldn't do that for us 30 minutes earlier is a mystery. It seemed to us that they gave service to people of importance, businessmen on expense accounts, guests wearing suits and carrying designer bags...and average people were best gotten in and out and ignored while they were there.
It was very poor service I think overall. Granted, we'd just gotten off of a flight from Tampa and were tired and probably not looking our best, but still, that's no excuse for such service. So, in spite of the good location and slick aesthetic, I wouldn't recommend it really, especially at the price they get...service doesn't match the price at all.

If you stay at the Park Hyatt, then be sure to request a room with a view of Mt. Fuji.
The Grand Hyatt probably has the best location if you are into night life. It's in the Roppongi Hills area with a lot of expats and international restaurants.
Don't know much about Conrad but the photos show that the guest rooms have a modern, hip design with a Japanese flair.
